None of the Nikon APS-C cameras tested especially well on the DxOMark tests; the D500 tested 62nd and the D7500 46th. The Full Frames did test better; the D5 came in 29th and the D850 25th.
https://www.dxomark.com/best-cameras-for-sports-under-45200-dollarsThis DxOMark test finds the lowest ISO mark where Dynamic Range stays above a given point, Color Depth stays above a given point, and noise stays below a given point.
added: quick, sure focusing is forte of the Nikon cameras.

Be sure to note the condition rating for each one.
All are manufacturer (Nikon) refurbs w/warranty. Not a long warranty but long enough to thoroughly check camera over. I have purchase Nikon refurbs from both B&H and Adorama and I have been very happy. The three that I have purchased (a couple were gifts for my kids) had fewer than 200 shutter actuations and looked brand new.
Thank You everyone. I will be purchasing the D500. Seems like the right thing to do. I appreciate all the feedback. To those who suggested B&H and Adorama, Thank You, I will look at those sites also. Have bought from both in the past and have been very satisfied.
Shot a Syracuse Lacrosse game today and had to use iso 3200 to get anything reasonable. I hate the noise at that iso on the D5500. The lighting in the dome is terrible. I was using a shutter speed of 4000, which is the highest the camera will do. I’m sure I will be happy with the D500. Will order tomorrow.

If you cut down on the shutter speed to say 1/1250 you can use lower iso. Just a thought.
