Police should get older police vehicles parked in front of schools. Park in different locations, but visible.

I used to live in a town of 11K people 7 miles wide with no traffic lights, but police cars parked in various corners, weekly.

Those passing through did not know what residence people knew.

I live in a town with a population of 150K.
It has 40 schools, that would be 40 cars and personnel.
Each of the 5 comprehensive high schools has a full time police Resource Officer on campus during school hours. That’s already VERY expensive with the cost shared by both the city and the school district.
Last year a bond was passed. Remember those? Those are the money that ALL republicans vote AGAINST, because they increase taxes.
30 of the schools already have, but among many other improvements, the 10 remaining schools will be reconfigured/remodeled so during school hours there is ONLY one way in and out of the school, and that’s through the main office.
That is and has been the trend now for many years in every school district in CA.
Is it fool proof, NO, but it helps.

Would that prevent local people from shooting up schools?

"ONLY one way in and out of the school, and that’s through the main office." Let's hope that there are alternative exits in case of fire, otherwise you could experience Coconut Grove all over again. Has the Fire Marshall signed off on this?

This may slow down violent attacks for a short while, but don't you think everybody will quickly catch-on and start ignoring parked police vehicles? These attacks are not carried out by "passers through." Besides, school shootings account for less than 1/1,000 of all shootings. It just seems like there are more because they always make the news.

I'm not sure they always hit the news. I was not aware of 18 school shootings this year but that's the number I keep hearing.

Of course there are many exits/gates etc, that goes without saying, they just aren't open.
The architectural firms that design schools today are extremely specialized in school design and theory, including shooters and escape routes should there be a shooter.
Fire drills train kids on where all the exits are and how to escape all types of emergencies.

Right... and wasn’t the shooter an ex-student of that very high school?

Nope, I wish that solution would work but it won’t.

Interesting; the Coconut Grove is an obscure reference to a Boston disaster in the 40s. Are you a retired firefighter or a transplanted Bostonian?

Neither. I've always read widely. Another sad reference would have been the Triangle Shirt Waist Company fire disaster in NYC.

You are well read sir! My compliments. The Triangle tragedy was equally, if not more horrific.

The Station nightclub fire in Providence RI in 2003 was eerily reminiscent of the Coconut Grove that happened 60 years prior.

Best regards,
Ken

Thank you for your kind response. I had forgotten the Providence fire, wasn't that the one started by fireworks within the building? That would seem to have been insanity. I checked the Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fire The entry also cites some other nightclub disasters, including the Coconut Grove tragedy.
