Take a look at the Panasonic LX-100. Very much like the Leica D-Lux but with different firmware, and half the price. Small enough to fit in a pocket and has Leica glass.

I use a Panasonic Lumix TZ70, it's the third one of this series I have owned, the latest model is the TZ100. The TZ70 is a superb little travel camera and produces excellent images.
Here is an informative article comparing the latest 3 cameras in the TZ series (in the US the model numbers are slightly different.

I do have a traditional camera as well, an Olympus EM10 with a few lenses which I use most of the time but, I have used the Panasonic only on a couple of shoots, and am happy to do so from time to time such as a trip like yours to Italy.

Take a look at the Sony RX10 IV. I like a camera with a view finder. I have had the RX100 and it does a great job, but no view finder. At 72 I tend to shake a little and without a view finder it is hard to keep steady and tripods are not always possible, especially for street photography. Good luck.

I too just came back from Morocco (coincidence?). I have 2 Sony bridge cameras, RX10 4 and RX100 4. This was the first time I took the RX 10 4 since it is a new camera in the marketplace. The telephoto is fantastic. But is it much bigger than the RX100 4. I am very pleased with both bridge cameras. The RX 100 4 is much less obvious and almost as good as the RX 10. I chose the bridge cameras because I don’t want to carry around lenses on a tour.

By the way, both RX 10 4 and RX 100 4 have viewfinders.

Being fairly new at this craft - can someone please explain what is meant by the term bridge camera?

A bridge camera Bridges the gap between a small point & shoot camera and a larger DSLR.
They usually have a larger optical zoom range like you can get for a DSLR but not interchangeable lenses.

Someone’s review of the “Best” bridge cameras HERE.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 tops this list despite a shorter zoom range.
Personally, I love my Fuji X-E2 for travel, but the LX-100 was looking really good.
The Fuji is not really pocketable, but I use a Nikon D810 kit for work, so the Fuji is a walk in the park.

Hi! I typically shoot with a Nikon DSLR (currently D5600), but am going to Italy in May and want something smaller and more discreet for street photography. I have seen some wonderful photos with the Sony RX100 v and wondered if anyone had any experience with them?

My choice.

Assuming that was for me, use the “Quote Reply” option as I have done, so we know which post you are addressing.

I think that is a matter of opinion. After selling my Nikon FF gear I have travelled extensively by car, bus, train, plane and boat with my Fuji XT-2 and three of its small, sharp lenses.

The Fujifilm X-T2 is, at the moment, Fuji’s flagship camera, but it is too large and bulky for travel use.

Another vote for the Sony RX100. I have the RX100m3. Excellent quality. If buying today, I'd go for the RX100m5 with better specs. A comparison is at: https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/features/sony-rx100-iii-vs-rx100-iv-vs-rx100-v-specs-compared.
