Small camera for travel

Hi! I typically shoot with a Nikon DSLR (currently D5600), but am going to Italy in May and want something smaller and more discreet for street photography. I have seen some wonderful photos with the Sony RX100 v and wondered if anyone had any experience with them?

I just came back from a cruise in the Caribbean and just took a Canon G7X Mark 2. I looked at getting a sony RX 100 Mark 5 but the price was more than what I wanted to pay. I took a photo of a sunset that won honorable mention in a photo contest on board. My prize was a 16 X 20 canvas print of my sunset. The resolution was amazing. I bring this up because there were others shooting full frame that entered and some won but I did too with a smaller sensor. I am going to the Mediterranean in April and will take only the Canon because of size. I also just bought a full frame DSLR that will stay at home. Lighter is the way I prefer to travel.

I have just returned from a 2 weeker in Morocco with an A77 and a trio of zooms. It wasn't terrible, but another fellow had a rather nice Sony bridge type camera and I was getting a little envious: Much lighter, obviously, but also less hassle swapping lens on the go and doesn't shout "I'm taking pictures" quite so loudly. I'd still keep the SLT for everything else, of course, but having a smaller, all in one would let me enjoy the travel ex-perience more. Has anyone gone this route and has regrets? Or kudos?

I worry a little about not having much zoom to get shots of all those beautiful ceiling details, but the trade off in weight and discretion seem worth it. Now to pick which small camera will do the best job.

There are many Sony ($$) fanboys here, but I strongly recommend the Fujifilm X100F for travel.

I have the sony rx100m3......its brilliant...especially if you like street photography. High quality images and very good in low light.It also has a setting which takes 3 photos in succession in low light and stitches them together which works suprisingly well. I think you can picked used ones up at good prices second hand now.

Take a look at the Panasonic LX-100. Very much like the Leica D-Lux but with different firmware, and half the price. Small enough to fit in a pocket and has Leica glass.

I don't have the Sony; looked at it and was seriously considering getting one until I read some reviews and comparisons of it and the Canon G1X MK III. The Canon had 24 mpx aps-c sensor and dual pixel AF. Its image quality is amazing for a camera that actually fits in your jacket pocket. The only things I can say negative about it is, the lens cap (I attached it with a piece of heavy duty thread) and the battery charge life. It takes a lot of power to run a big sensor and an EVF and to keep the camera small, it has a small battery. I can get up to 300+ shots per charge. I have 3 batteries for it so, not really a problem, and my car has a 110 volt outlet I plug a charger into.

The above recommendations are great cameras, but most have very limited zoom. If only taking one camera I suggest a high quality bridge camera. Myself, I pack three to five cameras in a carry-on rolling bag and put a sling camera bag in my checked suitcase. Once at my destination I use whatever I need on a given day in the sling. I have been to Italy at least a dozen times and have never wanted to reduce my gear more than that. I want wide angle in the old, narrow, winding city streets and a good amount of telephoto in some places. Also a fast lens for evening shots which are fabulous in the old cities and especially in Venice and other places with nighttime canal or river reflections. Then there is also the beautiful landscape. Let me know where you are going in Italy, and I can let you know my favorite spots in those areas.
