Mirrorless has some critical advantages that NO DSLR can physically ever have, no matter the brand of DSLR. Mirrorless image quality easily equals and often surpasses image quality from DSLRs. I was a top-end Pro Canon DSLR user for 40 years, yes 40 years, and I switched to Sony Mirrorless in January 2017 and would never go back to ANY DSLR ever again.

Look at this Top Pro Shooters Sony gear he is using right now at the Winter Olympics. And click on his Instagram link in this story and see his actual images this week from the Olympics, and then talk about mirrorless image quality. Anyone that tells you that mirrorless takes a back seat to any DSLR anymore, is just a DSLR fanboy.

Even the excellent Nikon D850, arguably the best DSLR out there, was quickly matched and in some ways surpassed when Sony announced its mirrorless A7R3 in late November, and then took more camera-of-the-year awards from the industry.

If Sony had put the A7R3 out in DSLR format it would still be Camera of the year. This entire thread is based on opinion, some good, some bad, some accurate, some not. The only Mirrorless cameras I use have an optical viewfinder, the one with the little peep hole.

That’s what I think. That thought has been mentioned a time or two on UHH, and I’ve always wondered why anyone would think that mirrorless cameras are inferior to DSLR’s.

The opinion I referenced from the parallel thread was looking for great art from MILC .... and not findinga it - which is a backwards way of looking at things.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s the camera that takes the image, and the photographer that makes it art. Regardless of what kind of camera is used.

Burkphoto you are a wonderful resource of knowledge ,and I always enjoy and appreciate your well though out posts. As a longtime Pro DSLR user (four decades) I switched to Sony mirrorless cameras, as some other top pros ,as well as many interested amateurs are doing.

I can say that with two cameras in particular, the Sony A9 and Sony A7R3 releases ,now there are no more real arguments that mirrorless can't handle any professional demands in terms of speed (20fps for A9), rolling shutter (A9s new exclusive sensor), image quality (the A7R2 and A7R3s 42+ megapixel back-illuminated sensor) , controls (A9 and A7R3 joysticks and control wheels and custom button functions), silent shutters (20fps A9, 10fps A7R3), mechanical shutter speed for high-megapixel capture (10fps A7R3), dual card slots (both A9 and A7R3), accurate and fast auto focus AF-C and Eye-AF (both A9 and A7R3), lens selection (now over 40 E-mount lenses available from Sony and Sigma), Pro support (Sony's expanding Worldwide Pro support network), video capture (top 4k capture from all levels of Sony mirrorless cameras, amateur to pro).

Not even mentioning great cameras from Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax and Fuji.

Cameras are just tools, but better innovative tools help us to create and expand our vision.

Nice summary.
These are majors.
Some minors still exist for DSLRs (battery life) and the low end DSLRs are still better than the low end mirrorless in AF speed etc.
When the A9 came out, I said to myself "the rubicon has been crossed" ...as the A9 features work their way down the food chain, the dslr will slowly go away....imho.

I changed from Canon to Sony and my experience is that the Sony A9 is giving me better sports action shots than the Canon platform. I shoot High School Sports and encounter a variety of low light situations, the Sony excels. I recently shot a game with the A9 and also the Canon 7D Mark III, the Sony outperformed. Also, I am judging my response on over 70,000 captures, the majority is Canon.

Poor comparison compare 1DX MII which can capture at up to 60FPS.

Um, isn’t that just for 4K video mode.

Recent release.......
In an interview with C-SPAN's Brian Lamb, New York Times photographer Doug Mills talks about his career photographing the inner workings of the U.S. government. During the interview Mills describes a particularly unique photo taken in the White House and how he took it using the Sony α9. Mills describes how the camera is giving him an edge in the rough-and-tumble, highly-competitive world of political photojournalism.

"I'm using a Sony camera which is completely silent. So, I can be sitting, standing next to my colleagues and they hear me, you know, formerly they could hear me taking pictures, but now, they can't hear. They're completely silent."

And...

"It came on the market earlier in the year and I've been using it now in 2017. I've been using it now probably about eight months. And I was asked to try them out to see what I thought. I've been a Canon photographer for 30 years, 35 years, I mean more than that, probably, my first camera was a Canon and they don't make a mirrorless camera. And so, Sony came to me and asked me if I would be willing to try it and to see what I thought. And I picked it up and I played with it for a few hours. And I remember saying to one of the technicians, this is a game changer. I want to use this camera."

Just saying.....

It’s gratifying to know that Sony is building a solid, robust mirrorless camera, up to the rigors of professional use in the field. The A9 is waaay beyond my budget, but it would appear that there is a mirrorless contender muscling itself into the heavy duty pro crowd. Good deal.

I read about that camera earlier and it looks like a good one, too. I think Panasonic may be stepping up to the plate, too.

I'd say they are...especially based of the latest rumors...Heck, I'm tempted with the GX-9 (not the G9) to replace my epm2.

Now that is really forward thinking on their part. Certainly raises the bar should this actually hit the market. Very interesting.
