I opened your photo. Made a duplicate layer. Used camera raw and brightened the picture mostly with exposure. Made another duplicate layer of this lightened version. On first lightened layer I made a mask of the water and blended the first dark layer with this new lightened layer. Now on my top layer, layer three, I made a mask of just the sky and blended it with your dark version. Clouds were still bright. I made a new empty layer and used a brush with a dark blue color and painted about 30% over the sky. Set the layer for Luminosity.

Thank you Deer2ker. I have to wait and see if Shakey likes it. I think I am starting to understand his directions and vision, will see.

Here's a step up from the last challenge. A very different part of the world and the people are different, too.
A Russian lady, in charge of the tour bus, told me in Europe and America smiles are cheap. In Russia smiles are expensive. Odd thing to say, right? I knew what she meant, many Russian people are kind of dour.
It's not that they are unkind. The ones I got to know were caring and kind but ready smiles were rare. They say the Scots are dour, having met plenty they've got nothing on the Russians.

Anyway, here's Moscow at night. Your challenge is to keep it a night scene but recreate the beauty of the lights and the buildings. Make it a place travelers would want to visit.
Watch out for all the problems that may make your image worth less than five thumbs. You can do this, give it your best shot.

Sorry no RAW file. You'll be fine with this jpg.

Oh! So close, Jim. You got everything right except your vision of impact. To get that you need to make a selection of the buildings, lights, trees, and bridge. Now brighten them, little by little, until the image pops. Do not make changes to the sky or river. Your image needs to make a reader stop and say WOW! That is a great photograph. I'm giving you five thumbs for technique. Concentrate now on your skills and creating impact.

This looks almost great, Mike. No noise, sharp and clear. However, look at your trees: they are mostly solid black with no detail. Avoid black areas with no detail. Make a selection of your buildings, trees, lights, and bridge. Now increase the brightness until you get rid of those solid black areas. Use your Brightness and Contrast adjustment tool and change both settings slowly until you get rid of the black and the selection pops. When you have rescued the lost details keep at it until the image has impact. You get four thumbs this time but you are on the cusp of great images.

An extremely good first attempt, kmanske2. No noise, sharp and clear. However, look at your sky is too blue. Look at your trees they are mostly solid black with no detail. Avoid black areas with no detail. Make a selection of your solid black sky area, restore some detail in the black sky. Now make a new selection of the buildings, trees, lights, and bridge. Increase the brightness until you get rid of those solid black areas. Use your Brightness and Contrast adjustment tool and change both settings slowly until you restore the details and the selection pops. When you have rescued the lost details keep at it until the image has impact. You get four thumbs this time but you too are on the cusp of great images.

Please click the 'store original' box so I can see your image in all its glory.

Sorry, I deleted everything after I posted. I didn't check the box because the image looked so pixelated when full screen in PS. Next time I will check it and also save the file in case I want to rework it.

Very close to perfect, Jim. When you brightened the buildings did you also brighten the sky a tad? Click download and it is impressive: buildings, trees, lights, and bridge. Left click again and as an image it is beautiful. However, the problem is the sky is too blue. Make the sky, and the water reflections, darker without losing detail. It is very good but not quite there. I'm giving you five thumbs because your technique is so good.

Interesting you say that Shakey. If you see any difference in the sky or water it is because of UHH uploading. When I made the change it was done with a mask and only individual buildings and lights open in the mask. I went back and checked. Might be some optical illusion going on because of the buildings being lightened.

Thanks for the update, Jim. I went between your original image and the new improved version; clicking download and left clicking again for the big shot. The difference is slight but you are right it's because the buildings are brighter. Interesting - one to remember.

Here is my attempt at following directions. It looks nearly garish in the thumbnail, but I like it in the download and in the editing window.
