Thank you for starting these challenges!!! I hope to do as many as I can in the future. I used camera raw filters on the sky and the rest of the photo separately using a mask generated using an alpha channel. Also added freaky amazing detail to the buildings.

Welcome, Racmanaz. I see you gave that sky some serious thought. It does indeed look like a brooding night sky, and no noise. Very good.
However, the buildings are too bright. Now look at the river: is that water reflecting your night sky, and also those street lights? No. I admire your enthusiasm but you thought the sky was all that mattered. Look at the whole image and think about what you aim to achieve. Why am I talking to you this way? Because you are, in your heart, an independent character who tells it how it is. And you want to be talked too in exactly the same way. Your lack of comment and your image speaks volumes, Racmanaz. I say again welcome to the Challenge. You get four thumbs for your effort:

Oops! Is the word that comes to mind. You can avoid that kind of error by learning to make accurate selections. By making a selection of the sky you can play with brushes and darken or lighten the sky to your hearts content.

You're right Skakey.

I wanted to edit the photo, but actually did not have time to edit the photo ... so a poor result.

Lesson learned ( hopefully )

Thanks

I tried, but the sky did not come as good as I thought it would. It looked totally different in my mind.

A Russian lady, in charge of the tour bus, told me in Europe and America smiles are cheap. In Russia smiles are expensive. Odd thing to say, right? I knew what she meant, many Russian people are kind of dour.
It's not that they are unkind. The ones I got to know were caring and kind but ready smiles were rare. They say the Scots are dour, having met plenty they've got nothing on the Russians.

Anyway, here's Moscow at night. Your challenge is to keep it a night scene but recreate the beauty of the lights and the buildings. Make it a place travelers would want to visit.
Watch out for all the problems that may make your image worth less than five thumbs. You can do this, give it your best shot.

Sorry no RAW file. You'll be fine with this jpg.

Shakey, another fine composition, well exposed. As usual I did this all in lightroom, I thought I'd need to do a lot of dodge and burn and was surprised that some simple adjustments and a little bit of split toning to warm up the lights and highlights did most of the trick...

Welcome, Revet. When you upload your image you need to click on the 'store original' box. It's way too difficult to critique the small size image on the page. Please post again.

Well, I guess you created something different, s2090. The problem is it looks unreal. We are looking for an image that goes beyond natural: more color, more detail, more impact. The lighting on the buildings suggests a dark night rather than a sunset. If replacing the sky had been allowed in this challenge, a star filled dark sky may have been appropriate. Note: your river with your sky should have had red reflections. It's easy to forget that water reflects the sky, but a magazine photo editor would spot it in an instant. If you brighten the entire image, you brighten the river, too. As you were having problems, but did your best you get three thumbs.

Lloyd, I'm guessing here but, when you got to denoise you went way too far. The image is so soft it's almost painterly. If it was the denoise filter pull back on that slider and everything will be sharper. You also lost detail and color in some of the trees. You were so close but you do get four thumbs.

yup i did go heavy on the denoise especially in the sky.. there was a lot of noise in the sky and I should have isolated the denoise exclusively to the sky... thanks for the feedback

OK, Willie, you went for the Disneyland look. It could have been so good. I like the starburst on the lights. No noise. However, the whole image is too bright for a night shot. You also over sharpened everything. Take your time, Willie, and think about what you need for a night shot full of impact. This time you ran the wrong way. Three thumbs but you are getting there.

So close, rborud. The buildings, trees, and lights are fine. The sky needs to be darker, way too much blue in the sky, and lots of noise. I think you used the Haze removal tool too much, note the effect around the towers. If you darken the sky you need to darken the river, too. In fact by darkening the sky and water you would have added impact to what is a promising image.
This one gets you four thumbs. Nothing added for the nice border, buddy.

Here is my version.
I opened your photo. Made a duplicate layer. Used camera raw and brightened the picture mostly with exposure. Made another duplicate layer of this lightened version. On first lightened layer I made a mask of the water and blended the first dark layer with this new lightened layer. Now on my top layer, layer three, I made a mask of just the sky and blended it with your dark version. Clouds were still bright. I made a new empty layer and used a brush with a dark blue color and painted about 30% over the sky. Set the layer for Luminosity.
