I’m probably going to open a can of worms (again), however i’m About to pull the trigger on a DSLR that I can afford.

I’m comparing the Canon T-6i and the Nikon D5600.
Any thoughts from folks that have actually used either one of these cameras?

I’ve used the Nikon film cameras in the past and was impressed with the quality of the optics. I’ve used both the Kodak DCS early digital cameras and preferred the way the Canon handled the image. Yes, believe it or not for awhile Kodak put out a line of pro-quality DSLRs. The DCS 520 and the DCS 620. One was Canon and the other was a Nikon. I throw that out as a bit of trivia for those that may be interested. Not looking to start a war, just some personal experience. Thanks in advanced, Mike

Both are good cameras.

The Nikon D5600 and Canon T6i have pentamirror viewfinders. If you go with a D7xxx or above Nikon you get a superior pentaprism viewfinder. The Canon 80D has a pentaprism. The glass prism inside gives a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder. I think it helps with composition.

One model is very temporary, so base it on the complete line as it may affect you years down the road, not just today!
With that in mind, I went with Canon! Use the worms for fishing!!!

My daughter-in-law recently bought a Rebel T6i with one reason being its Wi-Fi capability and she
got a Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-f/5.6 IS to go with it---good choices for family pictures for all of us.
For Christmas I got my son a Canon 80D with a 15-85mm f/3.5-f/5.6 IS lens since I taught him
photography many years ago and he is more advanced than she is.

Canon's autofocus is faster than Nikon's and that's why so many pros switched from Nikon. I've
not used Nikon gear since 1980 when I did the switch to Canon, so I can't give you qualified recent advice on this brand but, obviously, both Nikon & Canon are top-notch. Check out the
features on each of those models you list and ask friends or continue to read this digest. You
are certain to get many different opinions. Canon still outsells Nikon in Japan, just for your info.

During my Nikon years (23 of them) I went to the Nikon factory outside of Tokyo and they were
very courteous to me, allowing me to photograph their camera production line.

If you were able to afford the 520 or 620 back then you should be comparing the Canon 1DX Mk II vs Nikon D5.

I'm a Canon guy. But, both are quality manufacturers with quality systems. The third party lens manufacturers make them in both styles (as well as others brands). Which ever you go with you will be just as happy as if you went the other way.

My wife has a T6i. I used it all the time so she got me a 80D so she could have it back.

I shoot Pentax but if I was choosing between these 2 it would be the Nikon the reason being is the better High ISO performance and and better DR all other aspects are about the same the Nikon has more focus points but less cross type.

Both of these have WiFi. I am not sure you are correct about AF being faster on Canon most pros are using Canon because of the Profesional Support they receive and when you are talking about their entry level cameras such as these not really a factor.

Flip a coin. It doesn't make much difference. Go with the brand that makes you happy and comfortable.

I went with a Nikon and have no regrets. I almost went with a Canon but made my decision on what was available, and what I thought I knew at the time (my knowledge was flawed in 2013). However, I have no regrets with the Nikon I now own. I also think that if I had decided on the Canon, I would have no regrets either. Both are excellent cameras.

hangman45: As a Nikon user for many years, I belonged to NPS (Nikon Professional Service)
which proved to be very helpful for me when I needed it, as did CPS (same thing for Canon)---really no great difference between those in service & quick response to your needs. As a fellow
pro said to me (he was a confirmed Nikon user for decades and sponsored by them), "Just look at all those long gray telephoto lenses out there at sporting events and you'll see the example of why so many pros switched from Nikon to Canon---their faster autofocus!" Now he uses Canon.

It's a very personal decision, both brands have pros and cons. However, if you can be patient there are seasonal deals. If you like the Canon route, a refurb 80D might fit your budget and be a good deal. Canon refurbs come with the same warranty as new, 1 year. I bought one at a good price last August, and a big step up from my T3i.

Others will advise on Nikon.
