You can do that and it is a good idea... That said I use the same base plate as my 1dX MkII on my 1D MkIII and it fits fine. Manufacturers don't always change the basic underlying frame geometry of the camera bodies. I like the newer plate because it has the hole to attach the Military style Quick Release which RRS also offers. I can also use the L section on both bodies by using one screw and about 10 seconds of time. Or I can by a second section for both if desired. The thing where the side pieces can be different is in clearing the port access locations from body to body in the same series of cameras.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I have a few of the RRS plates and I never checked for interchangeability. I will now!

I've dealt with these folks many times and they've been very good and I'm comfortable with their products.

He assumed you were going to waste your time, like I did, and check his RRS link out. He could have simply stated that he was referring to one of the product reviews where one stated: "I have a Canon 7D Mark II and have used the BGE16-L Set for over a year with no complaints from me. But my wife complained that RRS did not have any L-Plate for her Canon 60D with a BG-E?? grip. When she wasn't looking I tried the BGE16-L Set on her camera and it fit. I ordered a second BGE16-L grip and my wife is all smiles."

Hence my follow up post. Using it and having it properly fit are two different features.
