I'm going to Panama next month with Caravan Tours. We will have one day "at leisure" at the Playa Bonita hotel. Rather than lounging around I'd like to go shooting. Any recommendations for a day trip or guide? Equipment is D5500, 18-140, 35 1.8, and new (actually refurbished from Nikon) 70-300 AF-P. Also trying to decide if it is worth taking my Mefoto RoadTrip (or just the monopod part).

Never have taken a tripod or monopod on trips. They get in the way and I have never needed one.
Whenever I am on vacation to a special place, like Panama, I find a cab driver and ask the cost of a 1/2 day guided tour and that I want to see the sights included in professional tours, but also want to see areas he knows about but that most tourists don't get to see. I have yet to be disappointed.
Hint: Be sure he speaks/understands good English!!
Have fun and stay safe! You will love Panama.

I have no idea what the playa Bonita hotel is or where.
But 2 years ago on the way to Rio we had a 6 hour layover in Panama City and wanted to see the canal, so we took a private tour and saw various things. There are lots of tour guides. They're not taxis, they're licensed private guides. I think the 4 hour tour cost around $75 to $100, can't remember, but it was fast, efficient, cost effective for the time we had and worth the cost. There's a good chance I'll never be in Panama again!!!
I always carry a small travelpod with me but it's mostly only for night shots or low light conditions. I wouldn't take it on a daytime tour. When traveling there are some shots I just can't get!!
BTW, I recall lens fogging being a problem every time I went into air conditioning then went outside. It's hot and humid there. Good luck!!!
