This is the list of the cities being considered by Amazon for their second HQ: $5 billion and 50,000 jobs.

Atlanta, GA
Austin, TX
Boston, MA
Chicago, IL
Columbus, OH
Dallas, TX
Denver, CO
Indianapolis, IN
Los Angeles, CA
Miami, FL
Montgomery County, MD
Nashville, TN
Newark, NJ
New York City, NY
Northern Virginia, VA
Philadelphia, PA
Pittsburgh, PA
Raleigh, NC
Toronto, ON
Washington D.C.

Where do you think they will end up?

I, as a Hoosier, am hoping for Indianapolis. We have four Interstates running through Indy making for efficient distribution.

Yes, I was thinking Indianapolis would be worth consideration. I don't know that distribution is critical here as this is supposed to be an HQ, but it could be. The new airport over there is a nice thing to have.

If you want a central location with lots of access and airports, Dallas is definitely one place. Nashville is also interesting in that respect but does not have the airports that Dallas has.

I'm thinking Montgomery County,MD, Northern VA or DC is good for dealing with Washington, but it's congested.

Indy would be a great choice; low cost of living and plenty of available land. Why they would consider some of the larger eastern cities with their high cost of living, high taxes, and overcrowding is beyond me.

You don't have what? I can think of a lot of things you don't have, I've been to Toronto.

However, now that corporate tax rates have fallen in the US, there is much less of an incentive to go "offshore."

Well, speaking to a Texan, we don't have nearly as many hurricanes... but you know that is not what I was referring to.

Dallas and Austin are not affected by hurricanes, but you have snowstorms, and Canadians.

I haven't a clue as to what you are referring.

Well as another Canadian, I’ll root for Toronto too. What we do have is a favourable dollar exchange rate that will nullify your corporate tax rates, easy access to shipping anywhere via the airport and highway system. I believe Mr Frim is referring too we don’t have the Donald but that doesn’t mean squat as we do have the cry on demand Justin. So they negate each other and fortunately are only temporary anyway.

I think Chicago has a good shot for it.

I'm not clear on what an exchange rate would bring to the table for Amazon. It complicates life and is unpredictable though with Justin in charge it is gone way down and will stay there as long as he's in power. The corporate tax rate is a HUGE item; this is why it was so critical to lower the USA's corporate down ASAP. I don't know what the underlying concept of having a second HQ is for Amazon, but I can't believe they would put it in another country.

My money is on the Washington Area to lobby Congress.

BTW, if Mr. Frim was alluding to President Trump, Mr. Frim is more stupid than I can imagine. As you said, heads of state in our countries are temporary, but in this case, Mr. Trump is the reason Amazon is expanding and Apple is repatriating so much cash and building a new campus. I sure hope Mr. Frim is not the standard of "thinker" by which you Canadians measure yourselves, unless of course he's at the bottom. Something like "Dumb as Frim."

You would think so. But Chicago is a dysfunctional state and on the verge of collapse. It's not somewhere you would build a second HQ. Also, winter time in Chicago is horrible and ORD is always fouled up. I avoid ORD 5 months out of the year.

I don't think pizza is big enough attraction for Amazon, but who knows?

Are there any reasons you think Chicago would be a good pick?

I'm also thinking we need to factor in the fact high taxation states are not going to be attractive with the SALT cap just passed into law. HQ people are usually better paid compared to shipping depot people.

I know Raleigh has made a proposal, but personally, being retired, I hope we don’t get it. although Raleigh has a ton of positives (3 major and half-a-dozen smaller universities, computer-oriented Research Triangle Park with every major IT Company from NetApp to Cisco to SAS to IBM, low state taxes, interstate Hwy. access, excellent quality of life and a pretty topography), it will increase property taxes and traffic (and I don’t need another client). I realize this is a selfish viewpoint, but hyper growth is not always an improvement in a city except for developers, and Raleigh has already seen huge growth over the last several decades.

Pegasus, you must be joking!!! I would love to debate the merits of Trump as the shining example of the non-racist honest truth-telling mentally-stable genius protector-of-the-middle-class and highly-respected leader of the free world, as amply demonstrated by his 37% popularity at home and America's standing in the world, but this thread is about Amazon. I apologize for making my quip, as I realize that Amazon is big business and would clearly be happier in the company of a billionaire real estate mogul who sees being the most powerful person in the world as just another box to be checked on his list of conquests.

If I ignore you, will you go away quietly? I could not care less what you think about anything to do with heads of state. This is NOT what this thread is about.
