I have bought quite a few lenses, cameras & other miscellaneous items from Amazon & eBay. For the most part I've been extremely satisfied with my purchases. Their return policies are very good & their reputation for customer service is outstanding. You should have no problems if you do your homework. Make sure the item you're looking at is what you want & read EVERYTHING about the item.

I have bought and sold equipment through both sites. Very satisfied.

I would suggest going to Canon direct for that lens. They most likely have one in their refirb stock.

On Amazon you often don't know the seller unless you click on an item showing it. Amazon is often just a middleman, taking and forwarding orders. The warranties can be a problem ... and the prices may be too high. My niece registered with Amazon when she got married, and the Amazon item listed for her was an older model that a liquidator was selling. The price was "save 20%," but that was off MSRP. Best Buy had the newer version at less than the Amazon liquidation, and the Best Buy street price price was not a sale or discount.

I agree also don't use them,. I purchased some sandisk CF cards, paid the full amount and they were corrupt, didn't get any money back either.

I am just about ready to purchase a Canon 24-105mm lens. I wasn't looking for a used lens but found a few for sale at great prices at Amazon, I am just a little afraid to do this. Has anyone bought used from Amazon and have you been happy with your purchase? How can you tell if a used product is from the gray market? Will Amazon tell you if they are if I ask? Thank you in advance for your response.

Amazon lets others sell on their site. They offer some protection, but I don't recall buying used through Amazon, just on ebay. There is a lot of trust involved. "Like New" doesn't always mean the item is like new. Look for refurbished lenses from dealers.

Amazon rarely handles any photographic merchandise. They sell you a stock number and then find a seller to provide the item, could be any one of ALL sellers. Save yourself all kinds of potential troubles and go directly to KEH, Adorama, B&H, or Cameta. Amazon is just a middle-man in the re-selling industry. They get their cut off the top of the sale. They know very little about photography and the equipment involved.

Aghree - I have dealt with KEH, B&H and Adorama and have found them to be reliable.

I agree, but Amazon has an ironclad return policy which mitigates the risk at least somewhat. >Alan

I found a used lens that I wanted on Amazon Marketplace ... the price was exceptionally low ... I contacted the vendor ... to make sure it was the latest lens, as described ..etc ... I was a bit cautious ... the vendor sent me all sorts of Amazon guarantee stuff ...
As I proceeded he sent me instructions on placing the order .... it wasn't through Amazon ... I was supposed to buy a gift card and send him the card info .... it was a definite fraud ... the email address he used looked like a legit company ...
Naturally I did not proceed ...
I notified Amazon ... no response ...
Notified the legit company and told them someone was using their name ... they were in a totally different business and said that they had heard about it before but couldn't do anything about it ...

I buy from Amazon all the time. I don't often buy lenses from them, but if they had what I wanted, I would not hesitate. I have only had one problem with them, and it was for a product that they showed as "delivered", but was not on my front porch as I would have expected. I filed a claim online and they immediately refunded my money (about $60). They said to reorder the item if I still wanted it. A couple of days later I noticed the package just inside the door of my garage. I don't know how it got there. Maybe the driver placed it there when the door was open or a neighbor did. Either way I contacted Amazon immediately. They said basically said "nevermind". The had no way to reverse the reversal of the charge and didn't want to have me "pay them back". They had closed the case.

The bottom line is that I think they would bend over backwards if there was a problem.

I buy from Amazon all the time. I don't often buy ... (show quote)

That is my experience with Amazon. Great company with an exceptional "customer-first" way of doing business.

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/lenses-flashes/refurbished-lenses Canon refurbished site. I purchased around 4-5 lens from them and never had any type of problem with them. Don't worry about dings and things.....they all looked as if they just came out of the box, brand new. After the holidays the choice of lens will be limited, just wait and keep checking for when they release they new supply of refurbished gear.

Many of the manufacturers' sites have refurb and sale items. Great source of gear at reduced prices. >Alan

Always read the small print. Almost all used photo gear on Amazon is offered by third party sellers not Amazon.
