I have seen so many posts about shots being out of focus. But If one can directly see the image produced by the sensor itself, that allows the best focus. Sometimes the AF picks the wrong thing to focus. Or won’t lock onto the desired object. Or maybe the light is too low. Or maybe a lens where AF doesn’t work or has errors. Yes, of course fast action shots don’t allow time for manual focus. I never suggested eliminating AF, but having easy MF based on the actual sensor image is a good option to have.

You are right in doubting that most cameras can go 400,000 clicks or more. The shutter stats at the link (I think further down on this thread) have FAR lower average shutter counts at failure than 400,000, except for the most high-end pro cameras. Most are under 100,000. A sort of bell-curve occurs for time to failure, as would be expected.

Just looked at the k5II (they didn't have data on the k5 they had a shutter failure at 97,000 but the data is pathetic
20 shutter counts total and just 1 failure. Its not necessarily even 20 different cameras. If they didn't have that 1 result what would the shutter life be infinite?

A lot of manufacturers give a shutter life of 100,000 at 10,000 a year thats 10 year life but thats just like the 60,000 mile warrantee car manufacturers give. There are not many cars that actually die at that kinda milage. It's just enough to give confidence it will last a while.

I had a '68 GTO I took to college in my last year when my father bought a more practical car. 5 year, 50,000 mile warranty. The timing gears (plastic) disintegrated at 48K, two months before the warranty expired. Talk about good luck. It took a dealer 3 days to rebuild the engine, and I didn't have to pay a dime, but I did have to pay for the hotel room, being a thousand miles from where I needed to be.

That was interesting, they used nylon gear teeth to control noise apparently, mostly replaced with stronger alternatives. seems even decades later they still used them. Seems crazy.

What's really interesting to me is that you would know about this in Ireland. Are you a transplant from the US? In two trips to Ireland (2001 and 2005) I only saw one American pickup truck and no other American cars. Links fahren.

The link I gave has a pretty interesting discussion about those gears, seems they used nylon in production for quietness but when they were replaced the service kits used metal gears. Horrible idea to use nylon especially since it will get brittle with age. Number of engines that must have been wrecked when that gear went ...

I did read much of what was in the link. I think that in the '60s, people didn't have high expectations of American cars, but there was no competition in the US. The imports started to get a real share of the market starting in about 1973 when gas prices skyrocketed. But as you say, it's amazing that GM continued to manufacture engines with what has to be considered a major defect into the 1980s.
