[quote=gwong1]Another thing you can do is use a PDF copy of your camera manual and cut and paste the information you think is most important into a single or multiple sheets that fit in your camera bag. Gary"

This is what I do...sometimes all you need is a catch phrase to bring you back to reality

I have problem with this thread...!!!
There are spec ops people who will tell you...
Always Cheat-Always win, The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
Do what ever it takes to capture the image that is in your head using the equipment at hand. There is no such thing as cheating when you come back with the image the client wanted or you wanted. You aren't out there to prove how much memory, education, etc. you have...you are there to capture the image...too many get caught up in the BS...no one cares as long as you get what you came for.

In college I was known for my cheat sheets. I had highlighters & several different colors of pens. My 3x5 cards had each quadrant of the card reserved for specific types of information, coordinated with specific colors. My brain was able to memorize the card like a snapshot (don't think I could do this anymore). Thirty years later I can still "see" the information on some of those cards. I can envision doing this for my camera settings. (but on the computer - no more longhand!) Thanks for all the great tips guys.

We're talking about people that are new to dslr cameras, not professional photographers. Once the information "gels" maybe we won't need our cheat sheets anymore. It's not about cheating, it's about learning. I think if a cheat sheet prevents a new photographer from throwing her camera against a wall and makes the learning experience more enjoyable, it's worth it's weight in gold!

Please take a deep breath and read my remarks one more time...that is exactly what I just said....there is NO SUCH THING AS CHEATING...do whatever it takes...make your own sheet, take a copy of your manual with you, do whatever you need to do. How can I make it any more straight forward in the English language?????.......Always Cheat...Always Win!!! You wrote "It's not about cheating, It's about learning" Exactly...you will never learn unless you "cheat"...do what ever you need to do to win. Winning defined as creating the image you want to create....

Yes ... it is called a Cheat Sheet .... a catchey phrase .... but they are more a synopsis of the manual ... todays DSLs are so complicated with many menu functions and icons ....many are rarely used .... the Cheat Sheet reduces but not replaces your cameras manual ... it provides a quick reference in the field .....

Oh...and by the way...I consider having a number of what you would call "cheat sheets" with me on every shoot an essential part of "proper planning." I always have a selection of "reference" materials ratholed in one of my bags. To try to deal with today's DSLRs or for that matter the point and shoots with their myriad of menus, functions, sub menus, etc. would be fool hardy. Digital cameras are modern day miracles. They are also confusing nightmares.......

I printed my reminders onto an address label, cut it to the correct size and stuck it to the back of my camera under the LCD monitor. It does not interfere in any way and is always handy.

Would it make you feel better if we use the term, "Crib Sheet"?

Awesome ideas. It's amazing to see
creativity. I am hoping for a "cheat sheet" that is geared towards settings for various shooting situations, such as F22, ISO 100 for "blurry" water. Anyone up to giving away their tried and true settings? Obviously, not all "formulas" work, but I for one could use some starting points to play with.

Bryan Peterson! He has awesome books -- great videos on You Tube. And he offers several online courses. Understanding Exposure to book or the course are excellent for us beginners. You'll soon have a cheat sheet of your own.

the magic lantern guides have a laminated cheat sheet that can be taken out of the book right before the back cover page. I have one for my canon T1i. it is great.

I don't need to take a deep breath! I ain't angry with nobody. I'ts not about understanding the English language, it's about reading sarcasm into your post that apparently wasn't there. You started out with, "I have a problem with this thread." What else am I to think? This is the only forum I've ever been on where people rip each other to shreds & use pointy little all-caps over NOTHING. I've been watching all you pit bulls for several weeks & trying to find out why so many of you are confrontational and ugly with each other. I'm outta here. I'm going off to find a kinder, gentler photography forum where I don't have to think twice to post.

two cents...I have a little round piece of paper I stuck inside my lens cover so that I see it when I take the cover off. It is a reminder to CHECK my settings. So I am not shooting sunny with the WB on Flourescent or cloudy...and I dont have my ISO set for inside when I am outside.
Other than that.. I dont follow to many rules.

like that tip Rivernan thanks
