I am a long time photographer. I was the organizer for the Long Island Photography meetup for 10 years with over 250 members.
I am not new to photography. The one thing that often surprises me, is how rude, nasty and mean some of the people...mostly men...are on this site. I tend to picture an old man, in his underwear, alone, lonely and posting negative comments.

Some people feel they have to criticize, insult, make rude remarks, make fun of, etc, when people post something. They do this even if they aren't even interested in the topic.

This is not always a friendly site. There are people that are very helpful, but the rude ones take away from that.

"Whatever you do, don't look in your manual or visit the Nikon site."
"I've always wondered how the human can be so naïve, such that their brain thinks $174.99 is far less expensive than $175. "
"I think too many sellers on UHH have an inflated opinion of what their old, unwanted equipment is worth."

I would like to request in 2018, that those people hold back on their negative comments.
If you don't have something nice to say, don't post anything.

There are newbies here, to both photography and to the use of the computer. Yes, it is easy to say, *just google it* but there is a way to say it without being mean about it. That might not be the first thing someone thinks about when they are trying to get some information.

We all share a love of photography, lets be kind to one another, be helpful, or don't help at all.

Wishing all a Healthy & Happy Holiday.

You are not alone, many of us have been victims of the negative members. Let's hope we can all be more positive in the coming year!

The real negativity is in the Attic. Even threats, should be censored, IMHO.

You are absolutely correct in everything you say.
But, there is more. There is nothing new under the sun; people will always be rude.
So, those that post should understand that one cannot be too sensitive, and should expect some inappropriate comments.
Merry Christmas to all.

Great Post

You got me on Man (Male), Old(-ish @ 63), and In Underwear at times. But not too mean or any of the other negative stuff from what I'm told. Yikes, the Ugly Hedgehog'ers are like "Boy Scouts" compared to people on FaceBook! But I know what you mean, some people are rude and even cruel on the UHH. Though at the same time much of the obnoxiousness can be entertaining even though I'm usually only an observer. I can think of some reasons for some people's less than helpful replies (that may contain some legitimacy to the offending responder). But I am not going to be the one to start yet another argument on that topic.

Let's leave this with a New Years Resolution To Be Nicer, Kinder, More Tolerant, Mature, and Helpful Photography Enthusiasts.

Thank you for your post, I agree entirely. Yes, people can Google. But it's more personal to be in touch with real human beings with a similar passion for their hobby/career. Sometimes those opinions count more than Google. If you don't like a topic, someone's question, or someone's photo, just move on to the next one. No need to be nasty. Grow up. Let's hope for more kindness in 2018. Whatever holiday you're celebrating, make it a good one. Be thankful for what you have and help others with what they need. Forums like this help many people in many ways. Not just photography knowledge. For some it's a link to other people that they don't have in their life. So just be kind, and if you can't, then be quiet.

The site just imitates life, yes there are such people here and I just tend to ignore them, but there are a lot of nice people as well who give friendly advice. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy healthy New Year.
