I use Flickr to post some of my photographs. I find it very useful as a personal reference tool as I continue to learn from other Flickr posts and my past photos.
I use Flickr to share albums and as an offsite backup to my four hard drives. I do the album sharing mostly with an email distribution list. A bit old school but it works well for me. I have no interest in random people viewing my photos.
I use it to archive my photos (not the only place I do, but it’s worth it for no cost and little effort) and for archiving work photos and videos. Now here it comes in handy regularly. I may need a photo months down the line and it’s there, nowhere else. Or I may need to be able to share a collection to the press department and it’s already there. The best part is it’s online and not on a hard drive I can’t access immediately.

Actually Kim, many of your images could be Explore candidates, but here's where the fuzzy science comes into play. The link below goes into much more detail, but a few items that are easy to try are:
1. Start with a recent image (past day to few weeks old, max). Explore is very "timely" in reflecting current images and the current environment.
2. Upload and set to Public within a short period of clock time.
3. Add the image to none or only a few groups and avoid any of the "fav" accumulator groups within the initial 24-hours.
4. Use a top-notch image and avoid large watermarks, some suggestions say no watermarks.
5. Release only 1 or a small few images to public. If using a group of images, set the most likely candidate to the first in the sequence in your photostream (last uploaded, or edit in Camera Roll).
6. If the invite is made, accept immediately, so actively monitor your account when trying for Explore for a recent upload.

Curious about number 6. I've got a few images in Explore, but no invitations. What am I missing?

Not sure. I've received invitations only as in 'please add to group Explore'. I went and pulled 4 random images. 3 of them are in group Explore and 1 wasn't. I don't own Explore so I don't have a wealth of detail beyond the link provided earlier.

FYI - images are SELECTED to be in Explore by Flicker, once they have been selected by Flicker for EXPLORE you may get an invite to add them to the group “In Explore”.
The criteria to be selected for Explore is not completely known, but supposedly being in a low group count initially helps. What makes an image interesting for Flicker is a combination of views, favorites and comments, along with membership in groups that do not look for mandatory comments and some other fuzzy logic.
There are several web pages that list guesses as to what will get images selected for Explore, but nothing concrete.
flickr is my favorite space for sharing photos and networking. I have pretty much stopped using twitter, google plus, 500px and facebook in favor of flickr.

I ran a search on the site and found some old posts but how many here use and like flickr?
It's ok. I use it. I have no problem with it. I also have two websites that I use, but flickr is yet an additional way to show my work.
Use it very sporadically.
