As an alternative, have you considered either the sigma or tamron 100-400. They’re lighter and sharper. I recently purchased the tamron and have been very pleased.

The Sigma SPORT is the top 150-600, and is markedly sharper than the Contemporary or Art versions. Do a web search for comparisons by pros.
When fine-tuned, the Sigma Sport is sharper than Nikon, Tamron, or any of the others.
As usual, it is a balance between budget and required IQ.
Of course, the lower price has a reason!

...depending on the focal length. The sport is sharper at 600mm where 80% of your photos are likely to be...Contemporary was sharper at 400mm.

Not sure about sport being "markedly sharper" but most reviewers do agree sharper at 600.
(Also double the price....and the Tammy G2 is very close to the sport for an extra 350 vs an extra 1000.).

I shoot the sigma contemporary ...fyi

None of the options will dissappoint you imho :-)

You'll be happier with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6. Trust me.

I have and love my Sigma 150-600 C. My cost a year ago was a bit under $1000, so the price is not surprising. I chose it over the sports model due to a significant weight difference. Also, I recommend getting the USB hub, which allows significant customization and easy firm ware upgrades.

Just a quick question: in a super telephoto, are manufactured faults magnified over those found in shorter glass, or is it all relative?

This is an "all things being equal" question in an "all things are NEVER equal" world. It depends on the manufacturer, the build quality, innovation, etc....

By the way, Sigma has the 150-600 C refurbished for $819 right now. Refurbished lenses are a great deal.

I had the Sigma 150-600 for Canon, liked the lens, but for various reasons it was too heavy for me to hand hold. But, it is a good lens, sold mine, but sort of wish I had kept it. Use the Canon 100--400L, but most of the time with either a monopod or tripod. Am also using the Tamron 18-400, which at first I did not like, was going to send it back. But with use I find it to be worth keeping and a lot lighter than the Canon 100-400. The Canon 100-400 is the sharper lens.

Did you have the "C" or the "S." The Sport is quite heavy.

$989 for the Contemporary including the Sigma dock has been consistently been the price from Adorama for at least a year. Good value then and now. I haven’t done as much shooting with mine as I thought I would, but really enjoy the days that I have.

Yes, it's because they don't have the IQ as the OEM lenses. I know several Canon shooters that bought Tamron 150-600mm lenses and were happy with them until Canon came out with their new 100-400mm lens. They have all switched to the new lens because it produces better sharper images than the Tamron.

Should be better at twice the cost! 😎
Take the same shot with the 150-600 and the 100-400. Crop the Canon image to the same as the Sigma or Tamron and you still have a better image IMHO.

I purchased it recently for my D7100 & D810 and love it.
