Sigma Contemporary lenses are superb performers. The price point being under $1000 indicates that there is a new product on the horizon and they want to clear out inventory.

This is interesting. The lens has been around for a long time, and perhaps they are working to replace it? Anyway, here is a review: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-150-600mm-f-5-6.3-DG-OS-HSM-Sports-Lens.aspx
Salient points are that sharpness holds up well toward 600mm, and it is sharp at wider apertures. If you use a crop sensor you will have a beast of a zoom lens in a smaller package. Be sure to carefully check the lens for good alignment of the optical elements too, as the reviewer ran into that issue.
Still, not a small purchase (at least to me). I would personally want to rent one to check it out first.

That's a common price for this lens-it's regular $1089, so it's on sale at $100 off. Sigma commonly puts it's products on sale. A great price on a great lens

Have had the contemporary 150-600 for several years now and love it.

I bought this lens from Amazon in April of this year and paid $989.00. This included an essential photo and camera bundle.

I had planned to get the Nikon 200-500. I read and watched enough favorable reviews to go with the Sigma Contemporary.

Attached is a photo I took with a Nikon D7100. I also use a Nikon D5500.

I am happy with the lens. I have not tested the Tamrons or Nikon.

This is the heaviest lens I own. It also needs good light to get good results.

I am considering getting a D7500 for better low light results.

Had one, liked it, best feature is the ability to update the lens. Sold it after a year and bought the Nikon 200-500.Very pleased with it. Sharper edge to edge.

The Sigma SPORT is the top 150-600, and is markedly sharper than the Contemporary or Art versions. Do a web search for comparisons by pros.
When fine-tuned, the Sigma Sport is sharper than Nikon, Tamron, or any of the others.
As usual, it is a balance between budget and required IQ.
Of course, the lower price has a reason!

Pricing is always a mystery. When the D750 was new, it sold for $2,300. Now it's about $1,000 less. If Sigma charged more than Canon or Nikon, they would have a tough time making a profit. Canon and Nikon have the big names, so they can charge more.

"Markedly sharper"? That's not what the reviews say. Certainly not double the price of the Contemporary sharper. Contemporary is an exceptional lens. What Art version?

I have had the C version for 2 years. It is one of the sharpest lenses i have. I use it on a cropped sensor so you should get the same results (first on a d7100, now on a d500). I tried out both the Sport and the C version when I was looking to purchase and I found the Sport to be too heavy for me to hand hold.
