Last week I traveled north from Seattle to Fir Island where the Dunlin congregate in large flocks when the tide is right. When you find them they will often, to escape a raptor, take off in large numbers creating patterns in the sky that are amazing and hard to describe. Natural fireworks is as close as I can get. These photos do not do the phenomena justice but I hope they give you some sense of the magic. It is quite a sight to see live and in person.

Really nice pictures!

I've never heard of dunlin, but I have heard of the phenomenon. Never saw it, though. These images are awesome.

would liked to have been there to see the flight dynamics. I think 3 and 4 are much more successful as photographs. 3 is awesome.

Nice captures but I wouldn't want to be walking under that flock.

Nice set. By the way, I always acknowledge every comment made on every photo I post. It takes a little time but I feel it is appropriate to thank people for the time they spend viewing my images. This is not a put down of you, just a thought - please don't take offense.

Linda, I am always appreciative when fellow photographers view and comment on my photos. My sincere apologies. No disrespect was intended in any way. I guess I just personally feel like multiple thank yous are annoying. But a couple of thank yous along the way would have been nice and appropriate on my part. Thanks for calling me out. Chris Picard

Not to worry.
