Last week I traveled north from Seattle to Fir Island where the Dunlin congregate in large flocks when the tide is right. When you find them they will often, to escape a raptor, take off in large numbers creating patterns in the sky that are amazing and hard to describe. Natural fireworks is as close as I can get. These photos do not do the phenomena justice but I hope they give you some sense of the magic. It is quite a sight to see live and in person.

Schooling fish also perform like this when a predator arrives.

Your photos are fantastic, with great light and detail. The series is particularly effective as you've shown them from distance to closer. Excellent!

btw, I just saw your October Seattle at night series. Quite stunning. I see that over 30 people responded, but you didn't acknowledge the comments. Hope that was just an oversight.

This is known as a murmuration, and it is indeed fascinating to watch. I have only seen it with starlings so I learned something today.
Edit: prior to your post I had never heard of a Dunlin.

Linda, I am always appreciative when fellow photographers view and comment on my photos. My sincere apologies. No disrespect was intended in any way. I guess I just personally feel like multiple thank yous are annoying. But a couple of thank yous along the way would have been nice and appropriate on my part. Thanks for calling me out. Chris Picard

Good question. Not certain I can answer it. But what comes to mind are multiple sheets drying on a close line in a moderate wind.

Nice set! Linda hit the nail on the head mentioning the shots from a distance and up close. Very cool perspective! Gary

Nice set. By the way, I always acknowledge every comment made on every photo I post. It takes a little time but I feel it is appropriate to thank people for the time they spend viewing my images. This is not a put down of you, just a thought - please don't take offense.

I feel the same way as far as saying 'thank you'. Thanks all, with a specific response where warranted makes more sense to me.

On a different note, I love seeing the Dunlin. I used to watch their shows at Jones Beach in NY.

You really captured them well.
