There's a local park with lakes and streams I like to go shoot birds... there are a lot of people in the park, so the critters have learned to ignore them and tolerate me getting pretty close. I try to go on weekdays, to avoid the crowds.

But, even so, it's almost inevitable that sometime during the day while I'm set up with my DLSR, 500mm f/4 lens, flash with extender, all on a Gitzo Series 3 tripod and quietly, motionlessly awaiting the approach of a rare bird... that some DOOFUS will wander over to me and loudly ask, "Watcha doin'? Takin' pitchers?"

Now, I try to be nice.I REALLY do. But sometimes I even surprise myself with my answers (not publicly printable), especially if the person scares away a subject I've been trying to get close to for a couple hours!

I was using my Nikon 200-400mm lens in Nova Scotia, when a guy leaned out of his pickup truck window and yells out, "Hey buddy, how many watts is your camera?" B^)

I won an award in a show held by the art guild. After the presentations I spoke to one of the members who asked what kind of camera I used. Soon after I was doing a festival held near the guild. The same lady came into my booth and showed me her new camera (same as mine), and said "Now show me what button to push to make my pictures look like yours!" I told her to just push them all and see what happens.

Or you could ask her, did she get the big honking f 0.2 $10,000 prime lens with the camera?

Excellent I did feel bad for her, because I have the Canon 5DMKIII, which, at that time sold for about $3,000 and she went and bought it hoping to just push a button and get good photos.

At my age, I don't have a long lens anymore.

What's the most annoying thing you guys have ever heard about yourself as a photographer? What grinds your gears?

The thing that annoys me the most must be "Tomas can take photos, he has an expensive camera".

While shooting (Nikon 610 with a 70 - 300 lens ) at a local pow wow a woman walked up to me and asked " Are you a photographer ?" I was too slow to respond to her with, no, I'm audio taping this event, here's your sign

"I'm just going to buy one 8x10 and make as many copies as I want"

"Um, no you're not because I just deleted the photographs of your child."

That's just a taste of what I have heard over the years.

Once I showed up at a McDonald's with my five-year-old son at an event where they had Ronald McDonald dressed up taking pictures with the kids.

When it was my turn to have my child photographed Ronald McDonald looked at me and said oh you're a professional I can't let you take pictures of other people's kids with your camera. " are you with the local news? " He saw my long lens and a big camera bag hanging off of my hip. I had a hard time explaining to him yes I am a professional photographer but this happens to be my child and I would like to have a photograph of him with Ronald McDonald. It took me a long time to get him to let me take pictures.

This was before I had a camera on my phone or I would've just use my phone.

I don't have clients and likely never will. Taking photos is my new hobby (got my D5500 about a year and half ago) but occasionally I get mistaken for a pro just because sometimes I carry a big Sigma 150-600.
Ladies stop 8ft in front of me and pose or wave at me like they're about to show up on a cover of some magazine (maybe an eye from that distance)
Some say "Look at the size of that thing!" I look down, look at them all puzzled and then my answer is something like "oh, you mean the lens..."
Some ask "do you work for somebody?" The answer is "Yes"
None of this answers OP's question, but it feels good to share these experiences...

I'm just a keen amateur , took some photos of our neighbours kids at a party.

The mum came to see me and said that she had shown the photos to a friend and they would like to know what camera I used.

My answer was almost polite.

My answer to similar type of comments is "don't ask WHAT I used, you should be asking HOW to use it..."
