We were there a year ago.
Monument Valley lies within the Navajo reservation.
Would HIGHLY recommend booking with Navajo Spirit Tours
and specifically with Larson Homer as a guide.

Larson took four of us for the day on a tour off the beaten path; areas where only Navajo
guides can access. Worth every penny. Still stay in contact with Larson.

If you have any questions PM me.
Great experience.

Sorry, not familiar with the qualities of either hotel as we always camp there.
I consider Monument Valley one of the most beautiful places on Earth. One of the fun options is a horseback ride through the valley at sunset.
As others have said, the entire four corners area offers incredible opportunities, Canyon de Chelly and the others. You could easily spend a lifetime there and still want more. Be sure to enjoy as well as photograph.
And while you are driving around be sure to listen to KTNN (AM 660) or one of the other Native American radio stations.
Enjoy!

When I went to Monument Valley, I took a side-trip to Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "Canyon dee Shay") and loved it. It's an amazing canyon, with ruins, trails, great photo ops, and nice tours. I couldn't recommend it more.

We were there last April. Stayed at the View hotel which we enjoyed a lot. Got to take in both sunset and sunrise from the hotel. What we did was drive our car in the AM into Monument Valley and then hired a guide for the back country in the afternoon. A very memorable experience. Hope you get to enjoy as much as we did. Also, Antelope Canyon is fabulous. Don't miss Horseshoe Bend just south of Page. A must see.

For Antelope Canyon wrap your camera with saran wrap. People like to throw the sand in the air to create the ghost effect. Watch you r blue histogram as the blue light bounces off of the canyon walls and can blow out easily. Be the first one there at 8;30 when they open. The view is by far the best hotel, you can even shoot the stars over Monument from your balcony.

My wife and I visited Mon Valley in September for the 1st time as well as upper and lower Antelope canyon. We stayed at The View and it is exactly at the entrance to MV where Gouldings is a couple of miles away. The View was great, couldn't be better for watching the sunset or sunrise unless you were down on the loop road. The restaurant had great food, overall, no complaints. We may be back there in January and staying at Gouldings because we will have our dog with us. Definitely take the loop road at least once. You should have wide angle to longer zooms to take advantage of the different photo stops along the road.

As far as Antelope canyon, you absolutely should do one or both of them. In September it was very disappointing. I booked the "photography" tour for the upper canyon and it was so crowded I couldn't even use my tripod much of the time. I would think January has many fewer people visiting the area.

You also should do a sunrise or sunset at Horseshoe Bend, it is quite amazing.

Here are a couple of photos, the one is the restaurant at The View.

Several years ago, I went in to Monument Valley on a camping trip with the Navajo Indians. It was wonderful to get to places where most people dont’ get to see. Probably needs prior planning. Maybe they have a day trip. Good luck, beautiful place.

The Four Corners region is amazing, if you are short on time, head to Page Az, if you are driving, you can visit the Glen Canyon Dam, highly recommended and then head east through the Navajo Nation, Monument Valley is a large open area, if you have that extra time, stay over-nite in Bluff not Mexican Hat, they are both in Southern Utah. You can make a day trip to Bears Ears before Republicans in Utah ruin the entire designated monument. Oh and if you rent a car, get the SUV, Flagstaff gets a lot of snow During the holidays I know because I drive that route every year between the holidays from S.L.C. to Phoenix. I also have been through that entire area of the Four Corners, you could spend a month back and fourth studying the area because the weather changes daily, and if you do, always check weather reports and local people who know the area, you don't want to get stranded or get lost and! stay out of riverbeds and canyon hikes if a storm is approaching, the run off begins fifty miles away and even in flat area driving conditions, if it is raining, any off road activity, you don't want to get caught in red sandstone mudddddd.

Horseshoe Bend is a great photo op, not far from Antelope Canyon. Take the lower Antelope Canyon guided photo tour. A tripod is required. The Navajo guides will hold back the crowds so you are guaranteed the best photos, with no other tourists stepping into your shot. You will be in groups of 5-10 depending on how busy they are. They are always busy even in winter. The sun is not overhead as long in winter months. Try to book 10am or noon tour, for best photos. It will be cold 30's, 40's. Don't be shy, the guides know every camera, that hundreds of thousands of visitors bring into the Canyons. They are happy to help , even the season pros , with the best settings for optimum photos. Tip them generously, they work hard to get you the money shots. The tour prices have climbed. Expect to pay about 95.00 to 115. For about 3 hrs. Make a reservation about a month ahead. Monument valley is a different animal. You can drive through on your own, and get the same photos as with a tour. The tours are loaded with cell phone shooters. You can spend as much time as you like at each monument when in your own vehicle. Again cool temps in the am and late afternoon, and windy. If it's warming during the day and cold at night, you may encounter morning fog in January. Check the weather and plan to be there when fog lifts. Sedona is a 200 mile drive from Antelope Canyon. Well worth it. Sedona sits at an elevation of about 5000 ft., there may be a dusting of snow in Jan. which may enhance your photos. From Sedona you are about 185 miles from the Grand Canyon. Enjoy.

I lived in Flagstaff for 23 years and some of your info isn't correct. The Monument Valley guide tours cover some of the same road as the self guided, but they go a lot farther south and east, and make a much bigger loop. They take you by 3 or 4 arches that you won't see any other way, plus the guide has a lot of history that you won't get any other way.
Mileage from Page to Flagstaff is 130 miles, Flagstaff to Sedona is 28 miles. Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon is 80 miles, which makes Sedona to GC about 110. If you go from antelope to Sedona you also pass Wapatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments. Both are worthy of a number of shots.

Re the restaurant photo; I joked to my wife, “What are all those people doing looking at their food? If we were there my food would be all over my face as I wouldn’t be able to take my eyes off the view”. Seriously, in retrospect I’m sorry we haven’t stayed there. All other restaurants with a view pale in comparison to that unique vista.

You will run out of time with Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley. They do not lock the gates at night. They are unmanned and anyone can come and go. We had our motorhome at Goulding's and I drove into the park after dark and did star trails and milky ways shots w no problems. The View will give you good photo ops but I found the hotel and parking area lights gave light pollution on long exposure night shots looking East.

We've been to Monument Valley 3 times. Have stayed at both Gouldings and the View. IMHO the View is definitely worth the extra dollars. Lots of perks including a very good breakfast for a reasonable price. I'd definitely recommend taking a guided tour. If you're interested PM me and I'll be happy to recommend one that yielded great photos, as the guide is a fine photographer himself.
