[quote=jsimp3]I have the long-awaited opportunity to visit Monument Valley, and possibly Antelope Canyon in Page Arizona. I will be attending an event in Phoenix, at the completion, I will have from January 1-7 to explore the area. I plan on traveling to Monument Valley on January 1 where I'll be stationed until my departure from Phoenix on January 7.
I'm aware of Antelope Canyon from all the breath-taking images I've seen over the years. Looking for advice on any similar place to photograph during my stay in the area. I've researched both the Goulding and The View hotels and trying to determine which would be more be rewarding photographically. Goulding seems to be less expensive at this time, but The View appears to offer the greater view of the monuments. I would appreciate any advice on the hotel choice and photo ops.
For equipment, I'll be trying out my recently acquired Nikon D850, and taking the D500 as a back-up.
Thanks in advance[/quote
Antelope Canyon might not be the greatest this time of year. The sun is so low and it would be better to visit in the Summer when the sun is high in the sky. Not exactly sure though but if you go let us know so we can all know for sure. If you go June 22 there will be oodles of people. Monument Valley should be great.
Outstanding captures! I especially like the sunrise with the cloud drama. I have reserved a room on the second floor... I'm considering upgrading to the third floor. I've been struggling with choosing the guide service. I will look into Hiking the Slot Canyons this morning. I'm actually hoping for a little snow without hindering driving to provide a little contrast. I've received a lot of advice about the rough roads... seriously thinking of leaving the driving to the Navajo's.
Thank you

I forgot to mention there is Grand Falls just northeast of flagstaff on Grandfalls road. leupp road off townsend road out of east flag. Townsend road comes off 89 just north of flag. A little farther nort of Flag is 395 (loop road) It goes by the sunset crater volcano also...
Great... thanks a bunch. I would love to make the journey to Arches National Park. I'll need to calculate the driving distance. Does anyone know if any of the areas are "No Fly" zones for drones?
Thanks for the video Silverhawk... very enlightening. Parts of the roads look treacherous.

The scene at 3:30 in the video is not on the auto tour route that they let you drive on. It is in the back country and can only be traveled on by special permit. It isn't even on the photo tour loop that the guides take you on. When I lived in Flagstaff I was in the National Guard and one of my soldiers LIVED in the park, another lived across the road from the park by Golding and was a tour guide in the park. So don't be afraid of taking the self guided park tour. The road is traveled eveyday by all kinds of cars. I have been on the tour 4 or 5 times in my Buick with no problems.
