There is no need to wait for them to speak to know where they are from.

Hi Bob, I will do my best with this one. I think this was a bad choice of photo so it is probably going to be difficult to explain. As well as people watching it is also culture watching too. Things which would give one person (me) a wry smile and you think would be obvious to everybody else, would probably go unnoticed by somebody not from that particular culture. The thing that is not obvious from the picture is that this was taken in southern Spain when the temperature was bouncing around 80 F. Whilst fashions have moved on over the years and generally become more casual there are some people that pay lip service to the weather but still cannot bring themselves to join the beachwear brigade. Their clothes are couture and immaculately pressed even when going to the beach. Generally they are aspiring to a class that doesn't exist anymore. Think of the British in India or new money trying to be old, even Margo from the Good Life, if you ever had that TV series and maybe you can get a flavor of what I was trying to express in this picture. But you are right, it is not at all obvious and now I have explained it, somewhat poorly, there is no more interpretation left in the photo. The confusion was entirely generated by me so I will try to find something else to put up.

I now known what the photo is about ... if I would have thought a little more I would have gotten it sooner ... I, too, have noticed those trying to stay above, outside, excluded from their surroundings ... I checked some of my past cruises but could not find a good example of the people in question ... !

It's the context that we all missed. And would continue to miss without the explanation. My first guess was to be "English", just from face analysis. But the clothes are what we see here in the colonies all the time. Dated, of course, due to the age of the wearer, but don't particularly denote beachwear.

This effort was a bit of a mistake from me, I realize now it was too much of an in joke. I just looked up your profile, nikonbug and although you may be retired I don't believe you are old enough to remember when Tennessee was a colony.

We were sitting in an outside bar / restaurant which was to the left of the beauty salon and there was a sidewalk between the bar and the drinking area. This pair came past and I thought “This is a photo”. They were heading in the general direction of the beach, maybe also the marina which is a possibility. It is hard to put a finger on what I felt but they just seemed to be out of kilter with everyone else around. Most were dressed down in casual gear but both of these looked as though they had been dressed by their mother.
That is most likely an unkind thing to say but they did seem to stand apart. Yes, English and probably somewhere between London and the south coast – guessing here. People watching is a pleasant pastime for idle moments. I think I had one idle moment too many here.

Haha, good one SATS. Tennessee was actually never a colony. It came about way after the first 13 incorporated into a Republic. My best to you over the pond, we just got back from a two week river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam and love that area of the world.

[quote=nikonbug] Tennessee was actually never a colony...

I stand corrected If that ever comes up in a quiz I will be ready for it I am a Liverpool lad originally. All Liverpudlians are supposed to be scallywags but that is not true. Actually it is but some of us disguise the fact really well. I came to Antwerp to work over 25 years ago, married a local lass and settled here. When people ask why I am here, I tell them I came for the women. That river cruise is on my bucket list. If I had known you were in Amsterdam I would have driven up and bought you a beer, it is only a two hour ride from here. I don't appreciate the 30 bucks a day parking charge but it is one of Europe's pretty cities and they can get away with it. I have not arranged anything yet but am considdering Norway for next year. There is an internal air company that lets you do as many flights as you like for 500 Euros the man for two weeks. The down side is that all of scandi' is expensive so I will have to work it all out properly. If you are ever in this general area again, let me know and I will buy you that beer.

Thanks, I will take you up on it. If you take the cruise, go when the sun shines! We got back to a sunny day, and I looked around and said, "What is that bright thing in the sky?"

We loved the trip nonetheless. Viking Cruise Lines. I particularly liked the sense of history from the tour guides.

Central Europe can be like that. Look on the good side, you are not spending hours in post trying to recover the dynamic range. The last time I was in in Amsterdam was for the 2016 Press Photographer of the year exhibition. The beer was not an idle offer.
