Hi
I am planning a trip to India in January 2018 and am wondering if I should take my 150-600mm Tamron lens (heavier) or invest in a Nikon 1.4X or 2X converter and use with my Nikon 28-300mm lens. I am hoping to some wild life photography. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

IMO, the 300mm f4 PF lens with or without 1.4X and cropping if need be would be optimal for you.( in addition to the 28-300) and on a Crop body.

But, with a FF 750 that does not crop well, you will NEED the 150-600 ....

For wildlife, if I had to make a choice the 150-600 will be it. 300 mm. unless the animals are relatively close to you will not do a great job in all cases.
Using a 1.4x or a 2x teleconverter only means you will make a slow lens slower and perhaps affect the quality of your files. If I had to make a choice I would go for a good quality 1.4x with a prime, not necessarily with a zoom.

2xTCs have the potential to result in serious photo quality degradation. IF you decide to purchase a TC, stick with a 1.4X model and stay away from 2X.

I just received the Tamron 18-400, still testing it, but so far not sure it is any better than the Canon 70-300 II, which is my main lens.

It is important to point out that a 2X converter cuts the "effective" aperture 1 stop to f8 at 300mm. I expect at 2X 300mm it make the camera body unable to autofocus. It will also make the viewer darker.

We will ALL be surprised if the 18-400 even equals the 70-300 II !

Couple of thoughts to consider-
- ANY teleconverter will degrade image quality to some point.
- any teleconverter will cause light loss based on their magnification.

Putting a T/c on the 28-300 may give you a better focal length - but depending on light conditions may to more tripod , or other stabilization techniques.

I wouldn't "step down" to the 5500 for a trip like this.

I have the feeling your camera is Full frame - if so consider shooting with the 28-300 - crop in post processing - you'll have a bigger image to work with

Last - if you have time - Try both ways - rent a Teleconverter and see how it works for YOU.

No, it's two stops for a 2x TC. And yes it won't autofocus, even with a 1.4 TC. Not to mention the 28-300 has such awful focus breathing that at close distances it is barely 135mm. And a lens that only gets an Imatest score of 2000 at 300mm in the center, and less than half of that at the edges and corners - well, what can I say . . .

I can't imagine how much the image quality would get with a TC. The OP should try using the DoF preview button to see how bright the viewfinder would be at F8 and F11, then try to focus manually.

He should take the 150-600, and maybe the 28-300, especially since the 28-300 is "ok" up to around 150mm.
