Hi
I am planning a trip to India in January 2018 and am wondering if I should take my 150-600mm Tamron lens (heavier) or invest in a Nikon 1.4X or 2X converter and use with my Nikon 28-300mm lens. I am hoping to some wild life photography. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Nikon teleconverters are not compatible with the 28~300.:

That is a lot of lens to lug about, but it you want decent wild, that lens will do it.
However your 28-300mm lens has a good range for walking about.
If your trip is purely wild life, then take the Tamron, but if you are going on excursions
as well then take the Nikon. the choice is yours.

Keep it Simple, take the 28-300. If you've got a Dx body, you have an effective 450 mm reach.

I have D750, used to have a D5000 that my daughter has. I could ask her to let me use it for a month that way I will have both 28-300 and either 20mm or 24-120mm for landscape on my D750. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for ideas.

A Nikon 1 camera with an FT-1 adapter and a 55-300mm Nikkor AF-S VR lens is what I use for telephoto shots. Gives quick center point autofocus and the CX sensor gives an equivalent focal length of 810mm. I picked up a used Nikon1 J1 for $80 and the FT-1 adapter new for a bit less than $250.

As you probably already know, the 28-300 is weakest at 300mm so putting a tele extender on it would be a mistake. Not to mention that you will have to manually focus in a very dark viewfinder. Overall, the experience will be pretty bad. The Tamron will be far superior.

I use a Kenko 1.4TC with my 28-300mm occasionally, and the results are good. At about $139, it was considerably cheaper than a 150-600mm lens, and I can use it on several lenses. You might want to buy one and give it a good workout. If the results aren't to your liking, you can return it. It would be a shame to come home from a trip to India with thousands of shots you don't like.

Ive just come back from india and have visited ranthanbore national park on a previous occasion. We were on a coach tour and I took both lenses this time but never used the tamron.Personally I wouldnt put an extender on the 28-300...I doubt the 2x would work at the long end.......best advice would be to take both if its at all practicable

I agree - and the big lens is very heavy and will not be on your camera very much.

Not what you’re asking... you could buy the Nikon 80-400 plus the 1.4 (maybe) the 2x But the reach of the 160-600 on a DX is greater I use the 200-500 and love it In India they have coolies who could help carry your gear for you. I had one who helped carry my large Miller CF 30 head tripod and my Sony broadcast camera back in the 90s when I used to fly there for videography.

Or trade the 18-300 for the Tamron 18-400...

2X converter BAD, Nikon 200-500 lens GOOD.

Go with the long lens. I have a 2x and it has a number of issues like clear focus and not being able to get a sharp image. I use a Sigma 170-r500mm and get very clear, sharp photos.
