I have seven prints on my wall right now, taken in 2017, that I'm very pleased with. I had about 10 in 2016. But how do you translate self-satisfaction to "viewers would find to be attractive and enjoyable for viewing?"

When I look at landscapes on 500px.com or fredmiranda.com, I see super-high quality technical work (gear + pp) but very few compositions or subjects that cause an emotional response. Most seem very generic: long exposure ocean scenes at sunset? Just how many of those do we need?

Sorry, probably not exactly on-topic, but how does one decide what would be enjoyable for others? "Others" surely don't all have the same opinions.

btw, Connie, I found a bunch on your flickr site that are super-attractive and enjoyable to me

It is for these reasons that MORE images are better ! (especially for SELLING) - and has nothing to do with what I think are the "best" ! My experience is that more often than not, most people are attracted to my images
that I do not consider among my "BEST" - it is part of the nature of ART.....

Maybe a larger question is - Can 100 images be accepted as a representative body of work for an artist ??

I am still striving to make that one great image.

Me too. If I could take just one great image before I die, I would be (very) happy.

How will you know when that one great image has been taken?
Will it be self-assigned?
Or will it be designated by your photographic peers, or the public ???

If my mother was still alive she'd let me know. It would be on her refrigerator.

In another post on online portfolios someone indicated that if you have 100 photos to put online that you think are really good then you are not critical enough of your work. I'm pretty sure I could get to 50 and maybe up to 100 as I have processed over 10,000 photos in LR. I could easily find photos that exhibit good craftsmanship and sound photographic practices, but most likely not Nat-Geo quality. Yes, I like my work and I am most likely not critical enough, but I think most of it is visually sound work although certainly not always in the great category and I keep working to improve. I have to believe that most photographers who take thousands of photos over time could find the same thing in their work.

Could you find 50 or 100 photos in your body of work to post in an online portfolio that you believe viewers would find to be attractive and enjoyable for viewing?

Connie, I'm with Linda you have some really exceptional photos on your flickr pages.

I post photos online to Flickr for my satisfaction only, probably none of them would I consider really good by any standard and my standards are pretty low but I enjoy them. Whoever the arrogant person was who made the statement just doesn't understand why most folks post their photos online its certainly not for critical acclaim, some maybe but most not. I post mine on Flickr and its kind of nice to get one of your photos in Flickr Explore which gets it seen by a bunch of folks worldwide, these "Explore" photos may not be "great" photos but are judged "interesting" by who ever or what ever does the judging on Flickr. As far as finding 50 much less 100 that viewers would find attractive and enjoyable for viewing, I probably couldn't. But at 71 I really don't care, I'm just filling up hard drives!

Attractive and enjoyable to WHOM? You would never find two people that would agree on all of them. So what is your point?

That's the problem with "good." What it means to me is not what it means to you. That's why there is so much disagreement in subjective Olympic judging. I could easily find 100 pictures I've taken that I think are good, but others wouldn't like them at all.

Nat Geo have you any idea how many images are shot when they are on locations
I've had a sit down with a retired shooter film than but hundreds of rolls only to accept between 3-10 images for an article

My point what do you consider your"keeper rate"

Most decent photographers with a bigger library could come up with 💯 I'm sure

Than add to that most of us are our own toughest critics

There are those I'm pleased with and those I'm proud of. I'm happy to be pleased - that's most of the time. Just some times I do better than that.

I believe I could find 100 images from my years of working with a camera. I graduated the Art Center College of Design's Photography School. And have been using a camera for quite a few years. I would say that of the hundreds of thousands of negatives and slides throughout the years since 1956, I have enough to get at least 100 images worth putting in a book.

I don't know about a book with about 100 images, but you could publish a Kindle Book on Amazon Kindle for free. It is totally free. Just upload a doc file (with your pictures(?) upload a picture for your cover, select your price and royalty level, upload your bank account information for direct deposits of your royalties, and you're all set. I haven't tried a book with pictures, yet... but I have 5 short stories and one screenplay on Amazon under my name: Catherine Pepin Kowalski.

I have taken pictures since I was 8 years old... I take them for my pleasure. Sometimes I share them. I very rarely will photoshop, lightroom any of them. How they come out of the camera is the way they are presented to others... I am not a Pro. I do not set up a shoot to capture an image for pay. I have had a few pictures used by others, but do not submit them for that purpose... I find that most people enjoy a nice picture. I enjoy learning more on the hobby, that is why I am here, to learn. I admire a pro, someone who makes their living creating a ad for pay.. I look at their work and try to understand how they did it. But don't we all...

I sell over 100 different photos each and every month so I would have no problem doing this.
