Mavericks is a spot near Half Moon Bay south of San Fransisco that has rather large waves, if you don't mind the 55 degree water and great white sharks. :)

Oh, I see ... thanks, Splat ... still didn't get "accept for the phenomenon" ... any idea what that part's about, Splat?

I don't know, but Mavericks, which can get between 25 and 60 feet at times, is quite a phenomenon. It was thought to be too big to surf until 1975 when a 17 year old high school kid decided to try it.

Dyxi ... regardless of where I'm from .... we seem to be getting further and further into the mire, here - don't we?

What ON EARTH does THIS mean?

"what I meant by so so surf is our ocean waves by and large accept for the phenomenon at the mavericks" ?????

Is this a reference to that old James Garner western on "your American" TV, or what?
No every year I think it is in March there is a confluence of naturally occurring circumstances that create some of the largest waves in the world. In a place just up the coast from me In Half Moon Bay. And all the greatest surfers in the world are given about a 48 hour notice and they fly here to enter the competition known as the mavericks. Where the waves are some 16 meters high or higher. And on occasion some are killed by these monster waves. You Can google the mavericks.
