...I have a 24x36 action print of my son playing lacrosse...shot in jpeg not raw...hanging in his room...the D500 can handle the large size print...

I moved from the D7100 to the D500 last spring and I have no regrets. I did it mainly for the fps but the autofocus system, DR, and low light capability are superior to the D7100. Good luck and have fun!!

The D500 is the best Nikon DX camera to date and quite possibly the best crop DSLR available now. It is very capable in most every shooting situation.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

latebloomer:

You will get amazing photos from either camera. I have several unbelievable photos enlarged to 20x30 and 36x18 from my D70 in 2006!

I would like opinions on a possible camera upgrade. I currently am using the Nikon D7100. It has served me well. I have been looking at the Nikon D500 at our local camera store.
This may seem silly; but, what I first liked about the D500 was that I could see the complete viewfinder view more easily than with the D7100. When I put my eye to the viewfinder I don’t have to move my eye to see the left and right sides of the view. I have checked this several times. (I am fortunate to have Wolfs Camera Store in Topeka, KS.) I have too many crop sensor lenses to change to full frame.
I like doing a lot of macro and the tilting screen seems very desirable.
Also, I am wondering if the low light performance of the D500 is a significant improvement over the D7100, since I take a lot of indoor available light informal portraits.
Is the drop from 24 pixels to 20.4 pixels a significant factor in the quality of prints enlarged to perhaps 20 x 30+ inches?

Thoughts on the above by people who have made such an upgrade to D500 or others would be appreciated.

I have an appointment coming up so I may not respond for an hour or so.

Terry: I shoot mainly sports and really like the 500. I also shoot with the 7100 with 24-70 2.8 for closer shots of players. The pixel difference I can't tell the difference.

Thanks in advance,
Terry Sandlin

Have them both. Low light is a big difference. I was shooting basketball with the 7100 iso 5000 and the 500 iso 5000 and you can see a big difference.

I have both cameras. Purchased the d7100 when it was originally introduced as a replacement for my d300. While I think it is a fine camera for many situations, I was always disappointed in its ability to capture action of any kind (birds, race horses, dancers, etc.) primarily due to its inadequate buffer size. It always seemed as if I was missing my best opportunities because the camera had to take a breather. I bought the d500 last spring and am very happy with it. The images are outstanding and the camera never craps out on you when the "best" opportunity presents itself. Additionally, low light performance is noticeably better. I would buy the d500 again.

It seems to me the bottom line is you like the ergonomics of the D500, and that is a perfectly good reason for getting one.

Cons: It's a DX camera. Pros: It's an incredible camera.

I think that David has captured the most important points. The D500 is, IMHO, the baby brother of the D5 as it has many of the most important systems introduced on the D5, the most important of which is the stellar focusing system. I've been using mine as the second camera for my sports work (but not since receiving the D850) and it does a good job, but it is not as good with low light work compared to the D5. When put in the light of Nikon's DX lineup, it is simply the best! Best of luck.

If you're leaning toward the D500, go for it! You're not going to find many negatives, except for the fact that you have to pay for it. Wait a few days for Nikon's big sale, $1,120 with battery grip (Page 3).

Wow!! I was just about to jump at that one myself, Jerry. However, it reads save up to $1199 WITH the grip. Camera only it's still $1799, down from $2499, so it's still a significant savings.

I want to thank everyone for their information and opinions. They forced me to consider new factors. I have a 150 - 600 that I have "tried" to use for birds in flight and a grandson who has taken an interest in sports when he started middle school.
Since I know the D7100 is a good camera, I looked at some alternatives. The D7500 I don't understand. They added features for focusing, sensor, etc. to the 7000 series; then, they removed and/or dumbded down some of the great features of the 7100 along with a significant price increase.
I haven't made a decision at this time. I am leaning toward the D500.
Do you think the price drop will be greater on Black Friday or closer to Christmas? I know it would be just a guess. Does Nikon have any history of such things?

Thanks,
Terry Sandlin

I don't think Nikon would have another sale for the 500. I paid $1995.00 and just missed out on the battery grip that cost 400.00.

Jerry, the real deal for many enthusiasts may be on page five. The D7200, body only, is available for $799.

If your luck is like mine, the price will drop right after you buy it!
I may try to go to Wolf's in Topeka tomorrow, just to check it out.
Not many good camera stores left in Kansas City.
Overland Photo is about it now.
