Always depends on the subject. On action shots usually take horizontal, but may crop to vertical. (It is easier to hold the camera horizontal.)

Depends on what you are shooting. I shoot mostly landscapes and Panos, so the horizontal format works best for me. If you're shooting portraits or street scenes, vertical is probably best.

In the two shots here (top horizontal, the bottom a 4-shot pano) these formats work well for me . . .

Awesome images!!
I believe it is beneficial to shoot both aspects whenever possible in case you get published.
I imagine the four shot pano is vertical images, when I am in that situation I try and always snap a good vertical comp that can stand alone in case.
But nice images, I usually shoot desk top but posted a few verts in this thread.

These are just delightful, Desert Rover ... thanks for sharing them ....

That first one gives the sense of both - doesn't it? .... Vertical perspective ... AND Landscape ... in the background .... real neat!

That Panorama shot was done with what, now?

Tripod (must have been - right?) or - handheld?

Thanks for the treat, DR ....

Yes, you did, Karno ... and thanks, again ....

You really proved that landscapes DON'T NEED to be horizontal ... and that Portrait mode can work just as well ....

They are very, very good ... no PP, I take it - right?

As I have mentioned before, it would be so nice if some one made a 30mm SQUARE sensor. I do realize it could not be a SLR because the size of the mirror would necessarily move the lens further away - but it could be a mirrorless using all the current FF lenses. And let me be clear here, shooting square does NOT mean your final image will or must be square - that is why we can CROP !

I do shoot mostly horizontal because that is the default design of the SLR type cameras for speed and simplification - but horizontal is a rather boring orientation- vertical is much more dynamic with more 3 -dimensionality ! ( if done properly)

David Muench has had a great influence on me as regards landscape work - as he shoots vertically most of the time with GREAT sucess !
As I have mentioned before, it would be so nice if... (show quote)

I PP as much as I want to get what I want which is much less post process then most,
And depends on what people want!
If I wanted landscape exactly how my eye saw it I would just hold a frame up to my eyes and look through it, fact of the matter is people like a little pizazz in there images and people who buy prints buy more regularly if they see a little more then what there eyes see everyday. I posted that last image of the sunset on Facebook and was blessed to be already selling 2 metal prints of it. I can hear in your tone that you are a purist and I have been there too, but at this point in my life I do what I enjoy!
I studied under the zone system with 4x5 in hand and still digging this hobbie to the core,
Personally I really could care less about what other people are doing, this is a personal exploration of my vision, and if nature delivers it is up to me to try and answer that call.
Really it is best to say what you feel, and comes off strange when you beat around the bush.
We all know Astro takes heaps of PP and raw takes PP. panoramas, portraits, wedding, animals, black and white, infrared, and so on.
Fly high and find your own nectar.
Cheers mate

I mainly shoot sunrise and sunset so it's about 75% horizontal...

There was one on whether or not you tether your lens cap to your lens... Fourteen pages later... Very enlightening... People like to go bat-crazy over stuff like that...

That's hilarious!
I must have been quite bored allowing myself to get sucked in? Never again.

Okay, all you square-format shooters ... this, clearly, isn't one for you ... so, you can skip it ... unless, you have some really positive remark!
