Nikon has announced it is pulling out of Brazil. Nikon equipment won't even be available by e-commerce except through gray market which as we know, Nikon will not service. Existing Nikon owners are only being given a vague commitment to service in the future. With a population of over 200 million and a GDP of nearly $1.8 Trillion, that's a pretty big market to withdraw from.

Nikon is also closing it manufacturing facility in China due to the rise of smartphones. The facility also manufactures lenses for its dslr's.

Can’t imagine this will do much for the value of Nikon cameras and lenses, not to mention other gear that we all own. I was thinking of selling my D7200, but now I wonder if I even could, given this bit of news.

What's the good news, there is not one iota difference in Nikon gear made here, in Japan, or in China?

Companies close sales/service regions because of a lack of sales performance. Obviously the sales of non grey market product in Brazil did not warrant a facility.

I wonder how that will affect the price of Nikon products?

Since Nikon announced that part of its restructuring was to concentrate on their higher end products, it stands to reason they would be shutting down manufacturing facilities as they discontinue or move work to other facilities.

Why this would prevent somebody from selling their Nikon dslr on the used market is beyond me.

It's not going to affect the price as Nikon recently made almost all of their DSLR's in Thailand. The Chinese made mostly P&S and bridge which are now not selling well. The Chinese made quite a good number of lenses in years past but recently I see more of lenses made in Thailand. The cost of manufacturing in Thailand I think is cheaper than in China.

All current Nikon business in Brazil is done via ecommerce, so i’m not sure what kind of facility where is going to be closed.

I’m guessing that Nikon is dropping product lines, so they won’t need that production capacity.

The original comment seems to suggest that the Brazilian manufacturing center was geared toward consumption in Brazil, alone. Is that the case? Or, was that manufacturing plant dealing with products that went to a number of export markets, and Brazil simply offered a good supply or cheap labor - which may not be so cheap any more - or other economic issues which may or may not be so advantageous now? There were a number of US companies that set up manufacturing in Ireland, for economic reasons and the supply of labor. But for multiple reasons, including the recession of 2008, many withdrew. Tax advantages change, as well. Apple had moved its overseas headquarters to Ireland, I believe to avoid the 35% Tax Rate applied to US corporations. Ireland gave the Company a 12.5% rate. But just this week, Apple decided to move to the Island of Jersey, just off the French coast, which required almost no corporate tax.

That should make Nikon China products collector's items!

Brazil wants companies that sell products in Brazil to make those products there. My company used to assemble products there that were shipped in as “kits” to satisfy the Brazilian requirements. The size of the market there didn’t justify the effort/cost incurred, and Nikon probably found the same thing.
