Nikon's list of lenses for the D850

Nikon has pulled the scam of the decade by publishing a list of lenses that will work on the D850. They are all new lenses that are way over priced and loaded with bells and whistles instead of great glass and built to last. Not one older lens (some are not real new but they don't have a replacement for these yet) is on the list and I'll put many of Nikon's older lenses up against these any day. This list is an out right lie and it has caused me to lose all faith in Nikon, for anything they say from here on out. They are indirectly trying to make buyers of the D850 think that if they have any older lenses they won't work on the D850 and that is simply not true. I viewed Steve Perry's review of the D850 and it may be fine in lower ISO's but still falls on the way side in higher ISO settings.

High resolution cameras demand high end lenses. Why buy a Maserati and put truck tires on it? This is a specialized camera deserving the best. The D810 had a listing as well when it was released. Surely you can use inferior glass but your results will be compromised. Nothing new here.

Thom Hogan's list is much more inclusive and well tested. As he indicates in this article, he has only evaluated Nikon lenses but intends to continue with Sigma lenses.

I see a lot posted about using specific lenses on specific cameras and how it affects the image. I know what diffraction is and I always look at each image at a 1:1 ratio for sharpness. In the end, does it really matter if I shoot with a Nikon 24-120 (which I use often on my D800) or a Nikon 24-70? How will my print differ from one lens to the other lens? Will anyone but me notice the difference? I've never had anyone say "I can't buy that print, it wasn't printed with the best lens!" I'm just curious about this subject and would like to know what the actual end result difference is. I do buy generally good lenses, those that are said to be good anyway, but I certainly do not always buy the best.

So, they want to sell their high end, high profit lenses. It's called Marketing, happens all the time. Big deal.

That's a good question. In fact, Thom Hogan in his list of lenses for the D850 has added the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 E but finds the f2.8 G questionable. Apparently, very discerning photographers do find a difference, i.e., those doing high end professional photography. You and I? Probably not so much. This would be a good question for Steve Perry, however.

I guess the cameras not up to your expectations, hope you loose some sleep over it. I'm assuming real photographers will try every Nikon lens they own on the camera and come to their own conclusions. Others that talk about photography will probably buy into it.....or complain.

I will lose no sleep over this list of lenses and their high prices. There’ll be plenty of people who buy the camera and put a crappy lens on it: The same group that drive all over town to save 10 cents on a gallon of 2% milk.....

Can't wait to see some serious Macro shot with this camera.. Heck I'd throw my nasty old Tokina on it and give it a try.

I’m sure you’d be fine. It’s a lot to pay for a camera. Trying to finance school for my kids and some trips. I’d rather travel than buy a camera

I have a D850. Look at my lens lineup. I have used everyone of them with my D850. I had a night shoot last evening and I used the Sigma 135 f/1.8 with an ISO setting of 2000 and I'm extremely happy with the results. I consider your rant hogwash.
