Hi just wondered if anyone with the Olympus E-M10MarkII has come across this problem with their camera, was at the Safari Park with granddaughter who was taking a couple of photos of a tiger when she said look this funny message is on the back of the camera it said "inside of camera was hot and needed to close" I turned the camera off and waited for a few mins then turned it back on took one photo and same message then it shut it's self off.

I checked all the setting and they were all ok changed the battery and sd card still was getting the same message, took it into my camera store they tried to update firmware to see if that would correct the problem (they had never seen anything like that before) but it would not accept the update same message and shut down. Camera store has sent to Olympus to see what the problem is I had one day left on my years warranty lol, but I have also taken out an extended warranty so hoping one of them will cover said problem, the camera has never been dropped or gotten wet in fact they laugh at me for being so careful with all my camera say I baby them too much. So was just wondering if anyone else has seen this message on any of their cameras

No, I hope they find what component is overheating and replace it, including the possibility that the sensor is getting too hot. Once you have thermal run-away, the only solution is to replace the overheating part. This is not a software problem. I'm an electronic engineer.

You were taking still photos, not video. I recalled reading an article that the Sony a6300 mirrorless had an overheating problem in video mode only. There was a firmware to correct the problem. I'm wondering did you have your camera sitting in the hot sun before taking photos. I've heard that some Sony full frame cameras will shut down when overheating. Don't know if they were in video mode or not.

My E-M1 mrII's manual mentions it. It is suppose to be brought on by heavy and continuous shooting. It may happen a little faster in a smaller camera than in a flagship camera. There is always a chance that the processor overheated in such a way that the circuitry of the processor was damaged (called "latent defect" in the aerospace industry). Since you are under warranty, you are set although you may be without your camera for a short period of time.

I have the OM 10. I begin to experience the same overheating to the touch though no messages came up in the LCD. I have never had that happen so I sent it in to Olympus. Basically they said that was not a problem but I knew that that was not a normal function at least that was my other numerous digital cameras. Over a short period of time, The shutter button and dial actually fell off the camera! Fortunately it was under warranty and I asked them to address the problem of the heat on the back of the camera. It was seemingly repaired and I have not felt that problem to the same degree since. Prior to my shutter button and dialed falling off I had read of someone on UHH that had the exact same problem and I thought how unbelievably horrible, and then it happened to me ! Your advantage is that there was an actual message on your LCD and I’m sure that they will make it right.

I would be surprised if this problem were new to the manufacturer. They should be able to diagnose and fix it (or replace it).

That excess heating is occurring means excess current is flowing through a resistance per IR^2 law. A short circuit means more current but R is low. A more likely source would be the internal resistance of the battery. So immediately after getting this message did you remove the battery to see if it was hot. The reason for the excess current would most likely some camera electrical component.

yes as soon as I saw the message I did close it down and took out the battery also the sd card and changed them the battery was not hot, even with the new battery in it still gave the same message, I am hoping they can repair it soon as I want to take it overseas instead of my heavy camera

I would call the number for the support line on the Olympusamerica.com website and get your extended warranty out. If you have a trip coming up, it's time to get rid of the message. They should honor the original warranty since you did bring up the problem before it expired even if was only one day. If not, check out the extended warranty's use. The message is indicative of firmware problem, component failure, or some latent defect. Do not stop until it is fixed. I have always had good service from Olympus and there is no reason that you shouldn't get good service too.

Odd to get this problem in 'stills' mode. It's a standard issue in video mode. When recording video the shutter is in 'rolling shutter mode'. That is it is running (usually top to bottom) continuously. That causes the camera internals to heat up. When it gets too hot it will shut down to protect the camera. It usually takes a surprisingly long time for the camera to cool down. It seems the temperature sensor may be operating even in stills mode and your problem is a faulty temperature sensor.

I think you said you had an extended warranty. That should cover you, because they normally pick up when the first warranty ends.
If it's from Squaretrade, you'll have no problem. They operate on a no-questions-asked basis with a 5 day turnaround for repairs. >Alan
