Hello everybody---My name is Tom. I just renewed my interest in photography and I am troubled. One of the troubled areas are, shutter speed. I have both a DSLR and a SLR and would like to know how to find and manage shutter speed. Any advice in the matter would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey, welcome, Tom. You are going to receive a lot of replies to this question. But also, You will find a lot of helpful photography videos, shutter speed being one of the subjects, on YouTube. When I am troubled about something that is one of the first free resources I go to. Doing a search on this site for "Shutter Speed" might also be helpful.

Welcome again.

With your digital camera set it's mode on A to set your depth of field, the camera will then set your shutter speed. Or you can set your camera on S, set the speed you think will meet the need of your photo and the camera will set the aperture. If you shoot M or manual, you must set both A and S yourself. Set A for depth of field and use your camera's spot meter to set the speed.

Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" is a good book to get. He explains the exposure triangle.

Some info to start with. If you use a 50 mm lens on your camera set the shutter speed at 1/60th or faster. If you use a 200 mm lens set the shutter speed at 1/250th or faster. Keep the shutter speed somewhat faster than the focal lengt of the lens you have. Some people would recommend even faster shutter speeds as a minimum. This is based on full frame cameras and a steady shooter and the subject either static or moving slowly.

If you need to freeze the action in sports or other fast moving subjects you need a shutter speed of something like 10 times the focal lengt of the lens. Like 1/2000th for a 200 mm lens for example.

Start with this and you find a lot more info with google and on youtube if you need. If you practice a lot you will get the grip on this quickly.

A safe recommendation is to use a shutter speed related to your focal length. If you're shooting at 200mm, use at least 1/200 sec. Use a faster speed for faster action, being aware that the faster the shutter, the larger the aperture must be. ISO also enters into the equation.

Now that is a great service! I'm always looking on Amazon for things to buy. I love hearing the UPS truck come down the street. Maybe you could have a daily post with suggestions for things to buy.

If she doesn't understand what a shutter speed is or where to find it, he's not going to understand most what everyone is saying. Buy the book. Learn WHAT shutter speed is, what aperture is, what ISO is.

Tom, if I were you the first thing I would do would be to learn basic photography. Apertures, Shutter Speeds and Metering are all basic photography.
Shutter speeds govern the amount of time the light heats film or the sensor. Creatively it is used to control motion. When using flash shutter speeds govern the amount of ambient light that reach the sensor or film. Usually when a manufacturer specifies a shutter speed for a specific flash what is being indicated is the maximum shutter speed at which the flash will sync. Any shutter speed below that is usable.
The Internet has plenty of information on basic photography.

Welcome aboard! First RTFM. It is all in there. two ways of directly controlling shutter speed are shutter priority mode that lets you adjust shutter as the main function of the adjustment mechanism and the other is manual mode where the shutter is adjusted to your liking. I too spent dozens if not hundreds of hours on YouTube learning all this. You can get all kinds of help for your exact model of camera.
