Before on UHH I have posted a photo of my Uncle who ran a small station in Ill. His sign stated 8 gal for a dollar including tax. That was perhaps in 1946.
Have you notice the Republicans have not bragged that they forced O'B to lower prices on gas? He was of course as they said the reason for the high prices... and the prices had nothing to do with the international market.

Obama was being blamed (incorrectly) when the price of gas was going up. Will he be praised (also incorrectly) now that the price is coming down?

When I was a teenager with a car (late 50's) we could buy Amoco white gas for $.19 and regular gas for $.17. Two dollars' worth actually got you some where. LOL

so £1.39 * 3.785 = £5.26
current exchange rate 1.5676 *£5.26 = $8.24 a gallon

Sadly, it equates to about 27 cents/litre=92.6 cents a gallon
