What is the best lens for street photography?
Wouldn't that be an individual volition?

How close do you want to get to your subject(s)? I think a 35mm is a good start.

Is your camera full frame or crop? For me I use a Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM lens on my Canon 7D Mark II, but your requirements may be very different.
I'm going to assume (always dangerous, but your question is general) that you're looking at focal length and zoom vs. prime, v. a lens for a specific camera body (if you are, then please say so, and you'll likely get more specific recommendations). And I'll also caveat it by saying there is probably no "best" lens, only options.
That said, most of the time I use a mid-range zoom (16-70) which covers quite a lot of ground. But I've also had success with my 10-18, particularly for shooting buildings in close quarters (which I can't completely capture with the 16-70) and, somewhat to my surprise, it is not too bad for general street scenes, though sometimes with a bit of cropping.
I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions.

The one you have on your camera at the time.
Personal preference rules here and no one can tell you what works best for YOU.

MT is right - depends on your style of shooting. Some like a wide angle and shoot “from the hip” assuming that the subject doesn’t need to be perfectly framed because of the wide field of view. Personally, I prefer a long tele, and stay as far away from the subject as possible so as not to influence/“spook” them. I often get set up for the shot pointed in a totally different direction, and then swing to the subject, fire, and then swing the camera away. bottom line is I don’t want to influence the subject with the camera.

Nobody has any business giving you advice without knowing which particular camera you have.

Sherry, welcome to the Hog!
Have you done street in the past?
If so, why don't you post one of your fav shots, not so we can say how good or bad it is, but so we can see your style of Street and THAT will tell us what lens to achieve that with.
For me it's a very fast lens in about 50mm on a FF.
It will give me the OOF lights in the background and handle existing light shots at night without adding any light!
Again, welcome to the Hog and good luck!!!

On which camera, Sherry? (as you probably know, it does make a difference)
Need more info! The only CANN I cann find is the stock exchange symbol for General Cannabis Corporation, which seems to be doing well. Good luck!

Canon, perhaps...? (Did the same thing, and it eventually occurred to me she may have just made a typo.)
Sherry, most folks are willing to help, and this is a pretty interactive forum, but as several have suggested, a little more interaction from you will get you closer to something meaningful for you.

If you have a crop DSLR, you probably have a 18-55 kit lens. This would be a great start for street photos. When you have viewed your first captures, you'll know better whether you need anything longer or wider - and that is down to personal preference. Good luck and have fun.
