Clumping ... what causes it, and how can it be prevented?

It's not the province of only Bridges, it happens with DSLRs, too ... why?

What IS it?
It's when detail is lost in individual photo-sites ... and everything sorta merges ... like warm jello, with ice cream, on top ....
It can be seen most often in foliage, but also in clouds, roofs, stones/pebbles etc., etc.

Can you kindly post an exqmple of this? I think i know what you are talking about, and may even have experienced this with some landscapes...but a picture tells a thousand words. If it is what I think it is, I am keenly interested in this topic.

In general why do UHH people do the hide detail thing.... do you go to a doctor and say "doctor, I have a problem and I am not going to say any thing but I have clumping!! Why dr why..." I am amazed that so many UHH people are inarticulate!! Expect others to be mind readers!!
Giving the benefit of a doubt to you, I looked up Clumping in Photos, yes... many photos of roots clumping, bamboo growing in clumps etc... a clod of dirt is a clump!! I searched in many ways and no definition of mention of clumping in photos except the actual photos of clumps of things.
I am going to the local Catholic Church and talk to an old Priest... perhaps he can advise me as to what ChrisT means regarding "Clumping." Did ChrisT have "like warm jello, with ice cream, on top" during the "Last Supper?"
When you're right, your right!

High ISO and overly aggressive use of noise reduction can cause clumping As can a very tiny sensor recording distant detail.
I have not seen this on larger sensor cameras other than when using very high (relatively speaking) ISOs.

I have no idea what clumping is but when I pixel peep at images from cameras with the 1/2.3" sensor I see what looks like smearing in details such as feathers. To a much lesser extent I see this in some shots with my 1" sensor (RX10ii). I know at least some of this is from JPG compression rather than from the sensor itself. Unfortunately, in the smaller sensors I have no raw image with which to compare.
Too much fiber in one's diet will cause 'clumping'...
