I have been using this lens with my canon 7D Mark II for about a year or year and a half. I shoot a lot of birds and other animals. I love this lens.
I was using the 100-400 push-pull lens and I love that one two. My wife is using this lens now and loves the lens.

Don't forget that it focuses as close as 3 ft! zoom in at 400mm and you practially have a macro lens.
According to the Canon specifications it has a .31x magnification.
That is far from a true Macro 1:1 magnification minimum.
You can by a Canon 100mm Macro lens for 1/3 or less than the price of the 100-400 II if you are looking for Macro.
I will agree that you can do as you say and crop greatly and get something interesting if you have the megapixels to crop.

Love mine. Putting it on my New Canon 5D Mark IV and heading to Namibia. Look at my Facebook Page in about one month from now.

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? If so, what is your opinion? Are the wildly favorable reviews (every review I can find) accurate? If so, this must be wonderful lens.
When I was a Canon user I owned one and used it with my Canon 7D mark II and Canon 70D. Worked beautifully on both cameras. I felt that it was an excellent lens and, If I still owned Canon cameras, I would not have exchanged it for anything else. It is pretty lightweight, has a brilliant close focus distance and produces fabulous results.
Bought this lens along with the Canon 7DII for a trip to South Africa. Can't say enough about its quality.
Previously my favorite lens was the 70-200 f/2.8, but as good as it is I believe this one is better--especially for wildlife. Most of the first 2 dozen photos at this link were recently taken with this lens.

I believe Regis Tolbert (active UHH member) has one. Perhaps he will chime in if he reads this thread.
Regis shoots a 400mm DO with a 1.4 or 2X extender.
Have used mine for 3 months now on a 80D for airshows, outdoor sports and wildlife. The lens is AMAZING as to clarity & sharpness.

Before I purchased the EF 100-400mm II, I used to own the EF 400mm f/5.6, but with a min. focusing distance of 11 1/2 feet was not useful for shooting Hummingbirds and other small Birds close by. The EF 100-400mm II has minimum focusing distance of 3.2 feet. I shot Hummingbirds and insects within 4-5 feet with great results. I use it on the 5D IV. You will love that lens.
Nice lens, very sharp. I also have the first version which was my first "L" series lens and have always been pleased with the results.
I did just discover a dust spec on the inner glass and am sending it in to Canon for a fix. Thanks to CPS it should be back quickly.
Happy Shooting
I use the 100-400 on my 7DII and I LOVE that lens!

Well, it would seem that the reviews are all true! Everyone who has this lens, or has used it, seems to think very highly of it. So, based on the reviews and your opinions, I ordered one. It should be here Friday. Thank you all for replying so quickly. I expect I will like it as much as you all do. Again, thanks for the help.
The Canon 100-400mm is a great lens. I have a 70-200mm 2.8 but I bought the
100-400 4.5 to get more reach when photographing wild life. When shooting with my 7D, it is equivalent to a
160-640mm lens. I have always thought of the 70-200mm 2.8 as the gold standard in zooms, but this lens is right up there with it.
I love this lens! I too have the 70-200 L 2.8 ll and yes the 2.8 is better than the 4.5.But you can't beat the 100-400 for sports and wildlife! Really sharp even with an extender! I would highly recommend it!

It is a 2x. He used the 100-400 before that, with a 7DII. His body is I believe a 5Dsr now.
Most of the time my 100-400 II is on my 7DII and I also use the 1.4x III. The IQ is about the same as the Mark I version without extender, which I also used to use. When on my 6D it is of course without extender. One of the main reasons I am going to upgrade my FF body. Probably to a 6DII* but maybe a 5DIV if I can come up with the $$. Both those will AF at f/8.0, the 6DII with 27 focus points and the 5DIV all 61 will work.
