Does anyone have any experience with this lens? If so, what is your opinion? Are the wildly favorable reviews (every review I can find) accurate? If so, this must be wonderful lens.

It is pretty much the top of the heap among telezooms with that much reach.
Mine is pretty much my favorite, and certainly most used, lens.

This should help your decision:

I believe Regis Tolbert (active UHH member) has one. Perhaps he will chime in if he reads this thread.

I love this lens first "expensive" lens I have purchased I didn't comprehend how soft the Tamron 16-300mm was until I shot some birds with my Canon I feel it was worth every penny !

Check out Black Rock Photography on FB. My friend Tara shoots her 5D3 and the 100-400 II most of the time. She loves the lens...

Best,

I bought this lens several months ago. I want to say it's on par with my 70-200 L 2.8 II but the 2.8 out shines the 4.5. Using both on 7D II and 5D IV. The 7D II with the 100-400 is my go to for wildlife and 5D with the 70-200 is my go to for portraits, scenes, and most general walk around. I believe the choice should be governed my the intended usage. It will not disappoint, but neither will the 70-200 L 2.8 II. Each lens has its place with a slight overlap. Love both lens and would be hard to part with either!

Don't forget that it focuses as close as 3 ft! zoom in at 400mm and you practially have a macro lens.

I have this lens and love it. It deserves all the glowing reviews it receives. Great reach with close focusing ability, wonderful sharpness. I use it on a Canon 6D and a Canon T2i. I would recommend it to any Canon user.
