A Chapel was built on the site in 1470 by Adam Goncalves Ferreira the first man born in Madeira. On June 1741 the first stone of the above Church was laid. A few months after it was completed it was seriously damaged by an earthquake on 31 March, 1748. It was rebuilt on 20 December 1818 and is the most important pilgrimage site in Madeira.
Emperor Charles I of Austria died in exile in Madeira and was laid to rest in the Church.
