I have three tripods. How I carry my tripod depends on: which one I am taking, whether or not I am wearing my backpack, and how far I am going. So 'it depends' is a logical answer.

Whichever way is comfortable/convenient/last resort.

You know, I have three, two ... one (there's a rhythm here) stays out in the car - think it's a Velbro or something ... lots of steel, not much aluminum, but when you plonk it down on a mountain, it stays ...

Second is one I keep right here, beside me - it's a GPD - made in France, heavy on plastic, light on aluminum, but sturdy as all get out ... I use it, primarily for product shots ...

Then the other one is a Bogen, on a dolly ... stays in the studio ... glides beautifully ....

Depends on the circumstances and tripod. I keep my main Manfrotto tripod in the car, then either carry it over my shoulder or attached to a backpack depending on how far I have to walk. My travel tripod goes on the outside of a backpack, my little travel tripod goes inside the backpack.

It doesn't matter how you carry it, just make sure you have it when you need it.

Oh, I agree ... I wouldn't be caught dead, without a tripod, of some sort ....

I make my wife carry it. LOL

I have a small BeFree Manfrotto tripod which I mainly use for night time shots. I just sling it over my shoulder and hand carry the camera. I pack it in a check on suitcase but take my camera and lenses in a backpack as a carry on.

I usually carry a tripod in my hand, use it like a walking stick when I can. Never liked to hang it off my shoulder as it seemed to beat me up to much when I did not keep my hand on it. Kind of annoying to hike and then make an odd move only to have the tripod swing around on a strap and give me some new bruises! So better to keep it in hand.
