I plant most of my perennials in half barrel pots, it cuts down on weeding big time! But you know what they say about pernnials..... the first year they sleep, the next year they creep and the next year they leap!!! You and your garden creatures will be enjoying your perennials for a long time!!

All my perennials are planted in #7 pots and then the pot is buried into the ground with about 2" protruding above ground level...this is due to a ton of voles in my yard. It is effective but very labor-intensive initially. I have one plant that is (of necessity) planted right at the base of a mature oak tree that is in a pot and is totally above ground. It is a Passion Flower that is conforming to the SLEEP phase. I believe that it is a likely one to end up in a half-barrel next year.

It looks like it was worth all your trouble, Bob! What beautiful images!

The garden and it's attracted pollinators has already paid me back and then some! Being privileged to sit among the plants and creatures
while reflecting on the joys of a long life is truly rewarding!

If those pots protect your plants frome voles, then they are a must!! I buy the 1/2 barrels at HomeDepot, they're plastic and David drills holes close to the bottom on the sides for drainage... they last forever! Good luck with your passion flower, they're so beautiful, I've never planted one, but just might!
