I recently asked a person I have known for quite a while, why he always go'es to the bar every day at 4:pm. He replied, "I'm retired, have no hobbies, bored, have nothing to look forward to". I said why don't you find something that is interesting and fulfilling to do? He said..."That would take time from my drinking." Priorities...Myself,... I take pictures because I love making reminders of Gods marvelous landscapes, and the self-satisfaction of being a photographer. Whether it is for money or pleasure, be happy in what you do.

If you look closely ,the ones that come in every day and order a beer. They sit and Gab for two hours or so with that same beer , then leave and on week ends they may sit there for four or five hours and have two beers total ,

Well, another useless poll degenerates into stupid argument.

Aside from commercial photography why do people take pictures? What do they do with them?
I had a couple cameras growing up. B&W film 27 or 28 exposure. I had to be careful about what I took pictures of because once the film was gone I was out of the film. I didn't have any money when I was that young so I was just out of the film. I guess it never occurred to me to ask my parents for more film. Anyway, it wasn't till I got my Blackberry camera I started really getting into taking pictures. With digital, there's basically no limit to the number of pictures you can take. Later, I joined Facebook and found a page dedicated to growing up in Daytona Beach Fl area (I grew up there). I figured out how to post pictures on the page and the next time I was there (I was living in Louisville KY at the time) I drove around taking pictures of as much of the stuff that was mentioned on the Daytona page as I could. It seems like about half the people on that site grew up there but moved from the area - They love seeing some of the Daytona icons they remember as kids!! This Krispy Kreme is an example. It seems like everybody sneaked there at lunchtime from the nearby high school at least once or twice and the people from other sections went there too. It's been there since the early 60's. There are hundreds of other places just like that - even though someone not from there might not think anything about it, people from the area get a real thrill out of seeing some of their old hangouts. The car lot with the Daytona sign in the picture is gone now by the way. It was originally Daytona Lincoln Mercury. It had also been there for years. They also sold used cars. Lots of local people bought their first car there. The building was torn down and a new Toyota outlet is there now. Just luck I caught word the Daytona in the picture. I've got over 100 GB of pictures from the Daytona area alone and still taking more

It makes me happy (whether I get a great shot or not). I matted, framed and sold them. Now I make magnets for the fridge, make cards to send or give away, play with them in Elements or Lightroom, put class reunions and get togethers on my web site (which I need to work on), got the stuff to print squares for a quilt or pillow cover but haven't done it yet, use the left overs to help fill my "put it in here and close the door so I can't see all the stuff I need to do" room.

"It makes me happy", says it all.....

I'm hoping your question was asked in the vain of trying to understand and learn.

All of the posted answers to date are valid. There is also an aspect of photographers sharing a piece of who they are with others, be they family, friends, co-workers, or neighbors. Being able to see, appreciate, and then capture a moment in time is valuable. It has value in being able to open the files on a computer or print it and hang it on a wall, whatever suits to photographer. It has value in sharing that moment in time with people who you care about and who care about you. It gives others the ability to learn about who you are, how you feel, and what you value. Photos are a means to share parts of your life when your family, friends, and colleagues cannot be with you for whatever reason. It allows you to show them and explain all the details about the photo so that while they may feel apart at times they always remember and feel included in your thoughts and feelings whether next door or on the opposite side of the world. As divers and underwater photographers it allows my wife and I to share that part of our lives with family and friends who cannot be with us as we experience that part of our lives. It allows those people with whom we share our photos to feel the enjoyment we feel as we dive and explore new seas and oceans. The best photos capture the essence of the moment as well as a piece of who the photographer is as they impart a small piece of themselves in each of the memories they record. Photography is about sharing, saving moments in our lives, and memories of things that speak to our hearts.

Does that description help you understand?
I'm hoping your question was asked in the vain of ... (show quote)

The question was asked so we as individuals can share our personal views, so that we can understand each other and share our own personal feelings..

Why do you?

Hi Mac. I use my camera as a tool that I use to earn my living. I am interested in what my fellow photographers take photos of & why. The only time I would take photos out of the studio and my clients, is when I want to do a painting using the shot as reference. I guess I don't have that special love of photography just to take photos. I just wouldn't know what to do with hundreds of photos of scenery, wild life, sun sets, beach scenes? But would want photos of family and friends, that I could frame and look at around the house.

Photography like golf, fishing, & a host of other things, is not a necessity to sustaining life. NOW eating is one of my basic needs. Photography for me is how I can eat. I assume that your comment was in jest.

Funny, I just made a adjustment in my thinking regarding that question. I have taken amature pics all my life, entirely for the memories, then realized what good are those ,sitting in a box in a closet, or on a flash drive?
So i created my happy wall'! I slipped the faves into a cheapy cardboard frame, and tack them up around the hut. THIS is why I took, and continue to take pictures.

Lee, you have offered a subject that has so many answers that it is impossible to answer.
We are humans with many views and quirks. All are valid.
This is a good place to ask this question. You will get more answers than you can handle. Good Luck.

Yes Don, its a way to know each other as individuals.

I perceive that you have come to an existential crossroads.. please give me your camera gear and I will put it to good use for you.
For I lack good equipment.

But even with the little gear that I have I take great joy in the challenge of skillfully capturing images and sharing the beauty or interesting images with others -many of which ( though not all) express thier joy in viewing them. .
It also provides me great pleasure to manipulate the images into different and unique artforms or to incorporate the images to make political ,moral , comical, observational or other statements to challenge or correct people's actions or mindset - or to make people laugh .

If you don't know why photography is done please send me your gear. obviously you have tired of your work and you would do well to do something else that brings you enjoyment instead of merely providing a source of income. Perhaps you have done it too long and forgotten the fun that it is..

However thank you for posting a topic other than nikon vs canon/ post processing or not.
Thanks .

Hi glyph.... The question I ask is not about me but others here to share.... Thanks for your comments. I love the type of photography I do for a living. Yes I have been earning a living with photography, and in the decades of shoots, amazingly, I have never felt tired or bored with it. I actually look forward to my next shoot... Why would I have lost my joy of photography, just because I have been doing it for years? Does someone that loves playing golf loose their love of being on the greens just because the have been doing it for yrs? Actually they may have a new love as they get better at it.
People come to me to get good photos, where snap shots won't do. I seek to be a better photographer for others. I don't have a private collection stored away on a hard drive, but I do have iPHONE snaps of family and friends that I like to hang on my wall. These photos don't need to be perfect, but they are just a wonderful image for me to look at.
As to me giving you my equipment, Glyph you wouldnt want it all, as they are really used a lot, heavy, and need a lot of room to use them properly. Stick with your hand held, and happy shooting my friend....
