When I went to Rome I took only my 24-105 and my best low light camera body. There were a few times I wished for something a bit wider but.......there were MANY times that I was glad I wasn't carrying any extra weight with me (like when walking up the Spanish stairs in Rome).

Thanks for all the comments...I was just curious what others would use on a trip like this. This is why I like this site as you can get ideas and, sometimes, constructive criticism. I will probably take the 24-70. As with other trips, this lens tends to be the most useful for me.
Chao!

Hey Hogs...I need some good advise about the best walk around lens for my Italy trip..
I will be taking my Sony a7rii and have the following lens to pick from:
Sony 16-35 F4
Sony G 24-70 F2.8
Sony 35mm 1.8
Sony 24-240 3.5-6.3

I'm trying to keep the weight down even though the 24-70 is the most heavy and my favorite. I will be in Rome, Florence and Venice.
Let me know what you think.

Seeing as you want to handicap yourself. Even though you have acquired a camera that interchanges lenses. Put the 24-240 on it as that has the greatest range. The rest are a waste of time.

Good point. Everyday lens.

Who cares!? Why did you buy the lenses ..... to use, I hope. If you have to ask strangers which lens to take on your trip, maybe you should not have purchased the lenses.

If you took the time to announce your trip and equipment here, what was your real intent?

Just go take photos!!!!!!!

As I have said before, anytime I have been on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, sooner or later on that trip, I have appreciated having my longest reach lens with me. I think you will too.

You will find that your 24-70 will be perfect. The camera is good enough that selective enlargements can be used when you need something to appear a little closer. You really don't need to be changing lenses in these places. I usually manage my annual Venice pilgrimage with just my Fujinon 18-55 on the X-Pro1.

A trip has always been a good excuse for me to buy a new lens. Example, in June went to South Africa. Now I own a Nikon 200-500 mm lens.

My wife and I took a trip to the same cities this time last year. I took my Nikon 55-300 and 17 -55 lens. I used the 17-55 more than 90% of the time. If you have it, take a very fast wide angle prime as most of the museums and churches will let you shoot, but not with a flash. If I was doing it again I would take the 17-55 and a wide angle prime with a f/1.2-1.8 range for the low light situations and leave the longer zoom at home. Hope this helps and have fun.

Having been to Naples a few times, I only recommend that you limit your gear and always carry it on your side away from the street. Thugs on motorbikes are notorious for driving by and grabbing your gear. Many dislocated shoulders and fractures.

I (like many others have) would recommend the 24-70 f/2.8 because it will give you the best in terms of low light and you will run into low light everywhere! Last time I went, I used my 24-105 the whole time and never changed my lens once. It was a pain to have to shlep all the other lenses thinking that I would use them at some point. Nope. Enjoy your trip!!

Take your Sony 24-240 and you won't be sorry. I travel extensively all over the planet with a 28-300 Nikon zoom lens on a D810 and only wish it was a bit wider. I have figured out how to over come the few times I would like a wider angle lens. I simply shoot a Panorama series and stitch them together in post. You can shot 2 frames or more if you see it to cover your subject. Good luck and hope ya get many great shots....

Having been to Venice and Rome, I would take the 24-240 if it were me. You will find yourself in close up and far away distances all of the time. It is the nature of Europe. Trying to change lenses when there are crowds may be difficult. Have a nice trip.

When we were there I carried a 6D and a 24-105 IS and 2 batteries and a charger. That's all and doing the walking we did, it was enough for me. Sure was a beautiful trip with places that are totally beautiful. My advice is to go slow and take it in. Have fun and EAT, lots of great places to do that, local owners of eateries tap you on shoulder as you walk and hand you a menu. Great folks with broken English.

I never once had trouble changing lenses in Europe. Of course I rode a bicycle, drove a rented car or took the train and avoided crowds and tours like the plague. Many more absolutely wonderful memories sitting in a small Bavarian restaurant/bar with the locals in a small town off the beaten path. Made several friends and was invited many times to local events and to stay with families etc.
