I just returned from a Viking Cruise (from Amsterdam to Basel) and 8 days in the Swiss Alps with Cosmos tours...70% of the time, I used my 24-240mm...it was excellent. My f4 16-35mm was my second lens of choice - for the remaining 30%. Pics were awesome. At night, I used my tripod and took many great evening photos. Also, wherever possible, I would use supports (such as a nearby wall or handrail) to help with achieving sharp pics especially with the 24-240m zoom lens.

Additional suggestions: carry 2 battery chargers (with the euro plugs) with 5-6 batteries for the Sony...and always keep an extra 2 batteries on your possession when you leave your hotel with the Sony. I also ran out of memory cards a few times - especially when shooting RAW/JPEG. Finally, edit your pics each evening to remove the garbage from your cards.

Don't forget the UV filter or something to protect your lens I would use the large zoom to avoid changing lens to prevent dust getting in I use my Nikon 18-300 zoom and it does most thing I want

Great point. I got around it by using the battery grip with sleeve for AA batteries which you can buy anyplace in Europe. Yes be careful of voltage differences, but I believe the canon chargers will accept 220-120 volts you just need the plug adapters. I used this method in Italy, Germany, Ireland and Crimea. As for memory disks, I went to local camera shops and had pictures transferred to CDs. Hzappy Shooting!

Why put down a fellow hobbyist? If you can't help there's no reason to reply.

We are all beginners at some point.

I feel the same way. I would take the lens with the widest reach, and a 24-240 is such glass. For low light shots you can use flash or program in high ISO'S. A couple years ago my wife and I took a cruise out of a town near Rome. I made sure to bring my Panasonic Lumix and my D3200 Nikon with two lenses, a 17 to 35 and my compact 75 to 200. I shot 2,000 pictures in ten days and was very satisfied with the varied results from my cameras and lenses.

I was speaking about the post that said if he has to ask about lenses he is not a photographer.
