I almost ordered a sheet of filter material for the eclipse. But then I reconsidered. There will be millions of public domain images taken with far better equipment by far better photographers than me. I was not going to take the ultimate photograph of this occurance. In 1970, I was in NYC for the March 7 total eclipse. So I've had the experience. I even got some great photos but not as good as the thousands of professionals with astronomic training. This is one where "I'll buy the postcard."
I do hope some of you intrepid explorers will post your work here. Maybe we should have a separate arena, just for pix of the eclipse.
I've pretty much consigned myself to the same. I will probably go outside and experience a darker than normal time during the day, but that's about it. I'm also dreading the unending posts of everyone on here within sight of the eclipse posting images that will range from really pretty good to "what is it"?. I might take a break from UHH for a week or so.

Hopefully they will post them in the Gallery where they belong.
Is there a chance in hell that anyone will post pictures of the eclipse in UHH? Nah. 😉

I have an 8" and a 10" Telescope and a 500mm Cat lens each with Baader film filters, and I have some film left in the box. But, I am 600 miles from Totality, so, as much as I would like to observe and even photograph, I won't. I did capture the Venus Transit in 2004 (like trying to eclipse a basket ball with a grain of sand). After thinking I had a decent shot, I saw one online with not only Venus, but also the Space Station in the circle of the sun.

I wonder how many burnt out cameras there will be.

Despite the seemingly constant threads here, and now on our TV even though we're several hundred mile from "totality", I just
hope that no one burns out a retina!!

I'm going to travel the 12 hours to Oregon to see the eclipse and all I'm taking is a LAWN CHAIR!!!
Don't get me wrong, I will do photography all the way up and some of the way back.
I was south of La Paz, Baja for the 7 minute eclipse of 91 and if was a rewarding experience without a camera!
I'll be there to experience to solar wind, the fleeting shadow, the diamond ring and seeing the planets come out.
Nat Geo would do a better job than I will anyway!

I think the most effective approach to capturing the experience of the eclipse is by video, not with still photography. The full experience and thrill is witnessing the lead up to total eclipse, achieving total eclipse, then slowly exiting total eclipse. Of course a time-lapse sequence of still images can capture this, but let's be honest - video can do it so much better.
I'm not in an area for the Totality either so I'll just view the professionals' results. I did get to safely view a total eclipse about 5 years ago by watching the reflection of the total eclipse outside our large windows of the breakfast nook. Very cool, very safe and it didn't cost a dime.

There has been a section especially for comments, pictures and questions on astronomical photography for nearly 5 years. For some odd reason, it's called the Astronomical Photography Forum.

I've never seen so much excitement over a shadow before :)
