As Billyspad has implied,
anything mechanical or electronic will eventually fail
but it is difficult to know exactly when.
That is why, if you are a professional, you always carry spare equipment of everything-
camera bodies, lenses, flash units, etc.

And shutter is not the only component that can fail; in my Pentax K-30, the aperture control mechanism is reported to be the weak link, but anything could fail.

A friend of mine used to repair cameras for a living. He told me that every camera has weak points-
things that constantly break and he would see the same repair for that model again and again.
It got to the point where you just had to tell him what camera model you had and he could guess
what was wrong with it- because he had seen the same repair dozens of times.

I have owned my D750 for 2 years and have over 200,000 activations due to my sports photography most weekends. I now carry my D7100 as backup but how much longer will my D750 last? Nikon says it should last 150,000 activations, if memory serves. Any experience to offer? Should I be replacing it soonest?

Hint! The image you are trying to capture would have won a Pulitzer if your D750 had not crapped out on you!

Get the idea?

If it is not broken, keep on shooting. What's the problem?

I think his concern is that this camera will fail during his sports shooting sessions, maybe this is why he carries a back up?
