When will my D750 give up the ghost?

I have owned my D750 for 2 years and have over 200,000 activations due to my sports photography most weekends. I now carry my D7100 as backup but how much longer will my D750 last? Nikon says it should last 150,000 activations, if memory serves. Any experience to offer? Should I be replacing it soonest?

When will the world end? Keep using it until it quits.

Nikon's 150,000 is a conservative (or minimum) estimate. It really depends on the camera, the care, etc. AND, when the shutter box gives up (if you want) you can have it replaced. While less expensive than buying a new camera, remember that you are replacing the shutter box in a camera that has miles on the rest of it too. Just figure that you have a minimum of 50,000 shots better than the expected minimum. It's good that you carry your D7100 as a backup. I have a D610 as my full frame and carry a D7100 for most of my telephoto. I use the FF for my portrait and normal to wide shots. In fact, in my case, the D7100 has about 3 times the activations of my D610. And yes, I will replace the D7100 with another DX crop sensor, and eventually the D610 with another FX.

Congratulations! If you got 200,000 out of a projected 150,000, that's pretty good. You've certainly gotten your money's worth out of it. If I were you, I'd buy another one.

I just got my D750 back from the Nikon recall, and they replaced the shutter, but it had nowhere near 200,000 clicks on it.

Wow, 200K ! That is impressive. You know you will not get a ton of money if you sell it, so use it until it slips into a quiet grave. Or better yet buy a new D750 and use the old one as your backup. I always felt the backup should be identical to the main body used. Instant and total familiarity.
I read awhile back that the shutter estimates were quite conservative and could be exceeded by many more exposures. Check the serial number of the camera against the recall, you could get a new shutter for free! Talk about getting your money's worth!

Yes, especially when using two cameras on a shoot.

There was a post recently showing a Canon shooting continuously till it got to its 200,000 limit, and the shutter failed. What a waste of a good camera.

I think this is the one.

It will fail today. Or, at some point years in the future. Or, at any time in between. Or never. Sorry, but that's about as accurate a forecast as you can get. As long as you have a back-up I would just keep shooting and not worry about it. Unless, of course, you are just looking justification for buying a new camera. Not that anyone would do that!

Please let us know when (if) it does fail.

The 150,000 activation estimate only looks the durability of the shutter, nothing else. However, there so many other things that impact a camera's length of life. The camera is full of electronic components, and any one could potentially fail at any time. How you treat your camera is important as well - physical blows to the camera, how much dirt gets inside, types of temperature and humidity fluctuations the camera is exposed to, etc.
Don't worry too much about shutter activation numbers. Just keep on using the camera until it gives up.

If it is not broken, keep on shooting. What's the problem?

Why fix what ain't broke? Shoot it till it doesn't. Maybe Nikon, like Volvo.....will after a putting on a million miles on one of their vehicles will you get a new car for free....so I've heard. Maybe Nikon will bestow upon you a new 750 if you reach 500,000. One never knows.

Do you ever send it in for regular CLA's, if not, at that usage I recommend it. My D3 I sent it in every 6 months for a CLA, it now has 576,000 actuations on the original shutter and still running strong. Now it is my backup camera. Cameras need regular maintence just like your car. I know there are a lot of people on here that will disagree but at the same time there are also a lot that take care of their cameras.

Shoot till it dies. A friend of mine had a Canon 7D rated for 100,000 and it lasted almost 500,000. When it finally died, it wasn't worth being repaired so he bought a refurbished 7D Mark II. Some just last longer than others. You're lucky. Keep shooting.

Smart to bring a backup body :)
