I just happened to find the "Ugly Hedgehog" this morning while browsing photography topics and am excited to be a newbie in the group! I'm semi-retired and self employed so with extra time on my hands am immersing myself again in photography. I'm an enthusiast and find the greatest pleasure in landscape and wildlife photography. My first digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix 2500, an inner-swivel lens, 2.0 megapixel model back in 2002. I graduated to the Nikon D70 and various lenses in about 2005 and then when Olympus introduced the Omd Em1 a few years ago I sold everything I had to for that and some accompanying lenses. I recently sold that equipment and purchased a used Canon SX50HS to use until I could figure out which direction I would go with a new system. I've decided to go back to the DSLR world with the purchase of a used Pentax K-3 which should be delivered later this morning. I've become intrigued with some of the old excellent screw-mount (M42) primes available so purchased an adapter and so far two lenses to start with. So far I've snagged an Asahi Takumar SMC 50mm F/1.4 and the Asahi Takumar SMC 135mm F/3.5. I'm looking to add either an SMC 28mm F/2.8 or the SMC 28mm F/2. After that I'll save up for the purchase of a K mount telephoto for birds etc.
Sorry for such a long intro! Am excited to see the results from these old classic prime lenses and post some pictures.

Hi Johannes, I am fully retired and have only been here about a month myself. I have done lots of replying and now I am psyching myself to post a photo or two or maybe not, we will see. You can get as techie or as non techie as you like here, UHH is for all levels, that is one of the things that makes it so good. So far as gear goes, life is a compromise, even full frame cameras have their down sides, there is no one size fits all, although some compromises are better than others. Back in my film days I have done the carrying a hundredweight of glass on my shoulder, then you miss the shot whilst you are changing the lens. Now I have gone for simplicity (for now). If you do decide on a K Mount system, there is no shortage of glass to choose from, that was the one all the independent lens manufacturers gravitated towards.

Thanks SATS! I was thinking that if you have some favorites you've taken in the past and they're not digital maybe scan and share. The K mount has a forum I belong to as well with a lot of useful information (Pentax forums) as well as opportunities to purchase used equipment from members. That is how I am getting the K-3. It has a lot of shutter actuations (about 20% of rated shutter life) but it is well cared for by an experienced photographer who has moved up to the Pentax FF. Nice thing is it came with the optional holder and an extra battery. The lenses have been acquired through eBay. I got intrigued about the older manual primes after seeing how well they render color saturation and tonality and are crazy sharp. They are of course manual focus only but that's okay too for the kind of photography I like. The long lens I haven't yet obtained for birding and other wildlife will be an auto-focus.
Best wishes for your retirement and I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures!
John

Welcome to the UHH from Blue Ash. I have used some of my old super Takumar lenses adapted and manual on a Nikon D600 with good results.
