I had same problem with win 8.1. Updates downloaded but would not install and machine ran slow as could be. I called microsoft tech support and they talked me thru a procedure of refreshing my files. No data loss, no files lost, just a refreshing of the systems files automatically. It took several hours to complete, but the end result was the machine runs great, and never had a problem since. I don't know if microsoft still supports win 7 but you may find something in a book on the operating system which describes the process. I was able to find it for win 8 after the fact when i knew what to look for. If the process is available, it's cheaper than buying something.

True, but it isn't so very hard to upgrade a hard drive. I have a 10 year old Dell D530 that was delivered with a 60 gig hard drive. I put a 750 gig Seagate hybrid drive in it and installed Windows 7 separately on two partitions and upgraded both to Windows 10, (32 and 64 bit). It runs fine, but it's too slow for video editing, and it maxes out at 4 gigs of RAM. Okay, that's complicated for most people. You can clone an existing hard drive and restore it to a larger one. Look at the free Macrium software for this task.

It wasn't worth the effort in my case, as the hardware and technology were about 10 years old, and I had already maxed out the ram on the motherboard. Sometimes upgrading to newer technology is the most economical decision.
A friend found me a newer used / refurbished laptop for $600, and installed the software that I needed, except for my Adobe PP software. I dealt with that myself.
Unfortunately, another friend decided that I needed an anti virus software, and didn't ask me before she installed it. There are horror stories about trying to remove that software, short of reformatting the hard drive. And she did this AFTER she had already had problems with it on her own computer, but before I found out why she had those problems. You can't simply use the add/remove function, because it disables your network connection, and you can't connect to the Internet to research the problem, and the software updates won't install, nor do they fix the problems that caused the software to lock your computer out of the internet if they do install.
When she sent me the links to remove the software from my computer, fortunately intuition told me to read the instructions and reviews BEFORE I started, because there might be hidden problems and there were. Needless to say, it's going to have to stay on my laptop for now, because I don't want to take it back to the first friend to have him wipe the hard drive and start all over again. It was a case of you get what you pay for, and free wasn't worth it this time.

I've never had a single issue with Windows 10. It works flawlessly.
I *do* have one major issue with the latest update of Windows 10. Outlook 2007 no longer shows my iCloud contacts. This is a big deal for me because I had created my own Yellow Pages so that I could find the person to repair a garage door or a broken bone. I have spent hours with all the "fixes" that have been put forth on the internet without successfully solving the problem.

Have a Segar Lap with Microsoft 7 Pro for 1 year and all it wants is to now is to down load updates and it cannot process the updates. This is getting to be a daily idiotic nightmare! Any suggestions?
My desktop has Win7 and wanted to do the same thing. I found a setting where I could turn off updates.
It's a great computer, I still have the predecessor of Windows Defender running on it but no longer use that computer to go on-line.
The problem seems like an update is corrupt.Go into system restore and restore the computer to a time when it was working. You could go into control panel and delete your updates.

I have Win 10 Home on 2 machines and Pro on one. All three run flawlessly. I have had every version since Windows for Workgroups and 10 is by far the best ever. There are so many switches that can be configured to customize the program to your preferences it takes awhile to find them all.
Go to Microsoft Chat/support. They will do a remote session- usually free and fix the issue. Just fill in the blanks. It is pretty fast.

edit: Sorry read your initial post too fast. I thought it said Surface Pro. Still worth a try to contact them.

It's the problem with Gaming computers. Not Microsoft problem. Get a work computer instead.

Win10 is no picnic either of course.
A common comment from those that don't or ever use Windows 10. Linux, right?
If Adobe would allow their programs to be you used on Linux, we would not have to bow down to MS and their gouging tactics. When you go to Windows 10, you are forced to sign and allow them to go into your computer and make changes any time. To me that is a crime.
